BIOGRAPHY:

Herb Ellis was born Mitchell Herbert Ellis in Farmersville, Texas, USA, on August 4th, 1921. He started playing harmonica when he was a child, but switched to guitar soon.

He played with Glen Gray and later, he played with Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra during 3 years. He then formed a vocal and instrumental trio called Soft Winds during 5 more years, until 1952.


OSCAR PETERSON GROUP


Around 1953, Herb Ellis joins the Oscar Peterson Trio:

They stayed together five years, until November 1958, releasing many albums as well as touring a lot. When Ellis left, Peterson didn´t replace him with another guitarist, but with a drummer (Ed Thigpen).

ELLA FITZGERALD GROUP


From 1959 to 1963, he backed Ella Fitzgerald. During some break with Ella, he also backed Julie London, as well as playing in TV shows with Donn Trenner.

He worked with Terry Gibbs during 1964 to 1965, also starting his career as session player.

He played duo tours with Joe Pass. He did the same with Barney Kessel for a while. The idea was made bigger with the formation of Great Guitars (with Barney Kessel, Joe Pass and Charlie Byrd).

Herb passed away in March 28th, 2010 in Los Angeles, USA, suffering from Alzheimer, just 5 weeks after his friend and bandmate Jake Hanna. He was 88. A great loss for jazz music.

BIOGRAPHY:

Good trombonist and fantastic arranger and leader, Peter Herbolzheimer was born on December 31st, 1935 in Bucharest, Romania. He then moved to Germany.

After playing in several orchestras (such as Nuremberg Radio Dance Orchestra, or Bert Kaempfert Orchestra), in 1969 he formed his own Rhythm Combination And Brass, a magnificent combo with many great musicians.

In 1967, he also started the so called Jazz Gala Concerts, where his band backed many great visiting artists, such as Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Nat Adderley, Clark Terry, Toots Thielemans, Albert Mangelsdorff or Gary Burton.

Apart from his own band, he also worked in German TV as arranger and bandleader. In 1987 he was asked to be the musical director of the BundesJazzOrchester (known as BuJazzO).

Peter died in Cologne, Germany on March 27th, 2010. He was 74. I love many of his albums, because to me, they represent a very interesting mixture between jazz and rock. While the horn arrangements were jazzy, the rhythm section is rock, and I love hearing that.
