BIOGRAPHY:
One of my favourite metal singers. I grew up listening to his albums with Rainbow, later Black Sabbath and then, forming his own band Dio. I´ve spent hundreds of hours listening to him. I bought his albums in vinyl, later on CD, later on remastered CD... I had never enough of Ronnie.
Along the days, I´ll be writing a proper biography about him. But I couldn´t wait to publish this page with his discography as my humble tribute to one of the greatest. Rock on!
Ronnie´s first bands were called The Vegas Kings, Ronnie & The Rumblers and Ronnie & The Red Caps, followed by Ronnie Dio And The Prophets (this band released a live album called Dio at Domino´s).
THE ELECTRIC ELVES
Band formed by Ronnie James Dio and guitarist Nick Pantas (both from Ronnie And The Prophets) around 1967:
They released one single in 1967. In 1969, they changed their name to The Elves.

They recorded their self-titled album, Elf in 1972, produced by Roger Glover and Ian Paice, who also offered the band the chance of touring opening for Deep Purple at the end of 1972.
In 1973, David Feinstein left the band.
New lineup for Elf in 1973, now a quintet since Ronnie Dio concentrated on vocals, leaving the bass role for a new member:
They recorded their 2nd album, Carolina county ball (although it had a different title in the States, LA 59). Again, it was produced by Roger Glover, and again, they toured with Deep Purple in 1974.
Due to those contacts, Ritchie Blackmore asked the band to back him in a song he wanted to record alone, a Quatermass tune called ´Black sheep of the family´ (it remained unreleased anyway).
The lineup remains stable until December 1974.
In December 1974, Mark Nauseef joins Elf:
They started recording a new album, Trying to burn the sun with Roger Glover producing. But, as the previous sessions with Ritchie Blackmore went so well, Ritchie finally decided quitting Deep Purple and asked Dio to form a new band, Rainbow, from the ashes of Elf. So the band came to an end in February 1975.

So, at this moment, none from the Elf members (except Ronnie Dio) remained in Rainbow.
This was one of the more stable (and superb) lineups. They released a fantastic album, Rising. They also released a very good live album On stage (2LP, now 1CD).
Along the years, as it happens with Deep Purple, there has been released more live material from the band. In 1990, it was released Live in Germany, a double CD from the Rainbow 1976 European tour (On stage had been recorded in the Japanese tour).
But in January 1977, Jimmy Bain is fired.

The album Long live rock´n´roll contains some classic from the band, like ´Kill the king´ (co-written by Cozy), ´Gates of Babylon´, and a fantastic ballad like ´Rainbow eyes´.
Sometime during 1978, Daisley leaves the band, and Roger Glover enters.
Now, with Roger Glover on board, we have two Deep Purple members in Rainbow:

In November 1978, Ronnie Dio leaves the band (he was replaced by Graham Bonnet). David Stone also leaves.
BLACK SABBATH
Early in 1979, Black Sabbath was passing through a crisis. Singer Ozzy Osbourne had been invited to leave, and Geezer Butler also left. Tony Iommi asked Ronnie James Dio (who was thinking of forming his own band) to join. Dio brought Craig Gruber from the first incarnation of Rainbow.
They started recording their new album, Heaven and hell, but then, Geezer Butler rejoined. Craig Gruber claimed in a interview for a Spanish magazine that he´s the one playing bass in the album, although this has never recognized by the band.
With Geezer Butler back in the band, the album Heaven and hell is finished and released.
But in August 1980, the great Bill Ward leaves.
The new drummer in Black Sabbath is Vinny Appice:
They released Mob rules and the double album Live evil.
In October 1982, Ronnie James Dio leaves to form his own band, taking Appice with him.
Many years later, in 2007, another live album was released from this lineup, Live at Hammersmith.

It was formed with his old friends Bain and Appice, and recruiting a young and superb Vivian Campbell on guitar. They start this new venture around October 1982.
They release a superb debut, Holy diver, a must in everybody´s heavy collection. Everybody´s playing here fantastically.
In May 1983, their lineup is augmented with keyboardist Claude Schnell for their first tour:
Their 2nd album is The last in line.
This lineup also released a song, ´Hungry for heaven´, in the soundtrack for the movie Vision quest (1985). Other artists appearing in the soundtrack: Journey, John Waite, Red Rider, Sammy Hagar, Foreigner, etc.
After their 3rd album, Sacred heart, Vivian Campbell leaves the band in March 1986.
In March 1986, Vivian Campbell is replaced by Craig Goldie:
Their next work is a live mini-LP, Intermission.
This lineup also released a song, ´Hide in the rainbow´, in the soundtrack for the movie Iron Eagle (1986). Other artists appearing in the soundtrack: Queen, King Kobra (with Carmine Appice), Helix, Eric Martin, etc.
In 1987, they release Dream evil. But soon after, Ronnie James Dio started making lots of changes in the band. First to leave is Craig Goldie.
After a long period, Dio chooses a very young guitar player, Rowan Robertson:
But soon, Jimmy Bain and Claude Schnell also leave, around June 1989.
And then, I´m still working with the bio regarding the multiple Dio lineups. I hope I´ll have it finished soon...

And in 1999, it happens again. After different temptative lineups for recording a new studio album, Magica (at first, rumour had it about the album scheduled to be recorded with Aynsley Dunbar and Bob Daisley, although the musicians used were Bain and Wright), it finally marks Jimmy Bain´s return to Dio. In fact, all the musicians had been in Dio in the past:
But some other commitments by Jimmy Bain prevented him to play in some of the tours, so Chuck Garric filled his spot in some of the tours (for example, when they played in my city...).
In January 2002, Craig Goldie left Dio again, being replaced by the great Doug Aldrich:

Ronnie Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer in November 2009. He went through severe treatment, but he finally lost the battle in May 16th, 2010.

- My opinion: The track, ´Stars´ is an absolute delight to those who (like me) love guitar solos. Many of my favourites reunited for a good cause. People from Iron Maiden, Journey, Blue Oyster Cult, Judas Priest, Dokken, etc. It was written by Ronnie James Dio, Jimmy Bain & Vivian Campbell. It features a different singer for each verse, plus 6 guitar solos (played by Craig Goldie, Eddie Ojeda, Vivian Campbell, Brad Gillis, Neal Schon, George Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Vivian Campbell (again), George Lynch, Carlos Cavazo, Brad Gillis (again), Craig Goldie (again), Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser). After more verses, there's another guitar solo by Neal Schon.
