BIOGRAPHY:

Great sax and flute player, Dave Winthrop (nicknamed Winnie) was born on November 27th, 1948, in Camden, New Jersey, but emigrated to England when he was 8.

THE MOOCHE

The Mooche was a band from Chelmsford:

THE MOOCHE #?
?
Ian Pearce
guitar
Dave Soars
bass
Brian Tatum
keyboards, vocals
Jeff Dann
drums

They recorded just one single in 1969 for the Pye label, ´Hot smoke and sassafras / Seen through a light´, produced by John Schroeder, but don´t know if this was made by the musicians listed above, apart from Dave. Does anybody know?

SUPERTRAMP

Winthrop joined Supertramp in 1970:

SUPERTRAMP #?
1970-Feb 73
Roger Hodgson
vocals, guitar
Rick Davies
vocals, keyboards
Frank Farrell
bass
Kevin Currie
drums

The band was to record their first album, but for some reason, Dave Winthrop didn´t play on it.

But he played in their 2nd album, Indelibly stamped, and some live songs can be found in the movie Extremes (although they don't appear in the soundtrack released).

In February 1973, all the members left Hodgson & Davies alone, who carried on with a new lineup.

CHICKEN SHACK

In 1977, Stan Webb resurrects mythical band Chicken Shack:

CHICKEN SHACK #?
1977
êBroken Glass
êBroken Glass
Stan Webb
vocals, guitar
Robbie Blunt
guitar, vocals
Paul Martinez
bass

They recorded an album, The creeper, with help from Tony Ashton.

After a while, Martinez left, and his replacement is Ray Knott, Spevock´s old mate in Babe Ruth:

CHICKEN SHACK #?
1977-1978
Stan Webb
vocals, guitar
Robbie Blunt
guitar, vocals
Ray Knott
bass

but Knott left the band very soon.

Steve York joined Chicken Shack around 1978, replacing Ray Knott:

CHICKEN SHACK #?
1978-1979
Stan Webb
vocals, guitar
Robbie Blunt
guitar, vocals
Steve York
bass

This lineup released a very good album in 1978, That's the way we are, before Spevock left them in 1979.

For a tour in 1979, the drum seat in Chicken Shack was filled by Louis Borenius:

CHICKEN SHACK #
Stan Webb
vocals, guitar
Robbie Blunt
guitar, vocals
Steve York
bass
Louis Borenius
drums
The Bucksê

In 1979, all the members (except Stan Webb, of course) left the band.

THE YOUNG BUCKS

I still have to find proper info about Dave playing with The Young Bucks. I don´t know if it´s my mistake, but were The Bucks and The Young Bucks the same band? I know many members are the same, but can´t say it for sure. And I guess there were more lineups with Dave in the band (probably with Seb Shelton at the same time). Help, please!

THE BUCKS

In 1979, Dave Winthrop joins The Bucks:

THE BUCKS #?
1979-Jul 79
êChicken Shack
Pat Rafferty
vocals, keyboards
Tony Wadsworth
vocals, guitar
Geoff Lincoln
bass
Archie Brown
sax
Jeff Rich
drums
Secret Affairê

But they split after a few months, in July 1979.

SECRET AFFAIR

In July 1979, Secret Affair expands to a quintet when Dave Winthrop joins:

SECRET AFFAIR #2
Jul 79-1980
êThe Bucks
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
David Cairns
guitar
Dennis Smith
bass
Seb Shelton
drums

They released two albums, Glory boys (in 1979, with help on vocals by fantastic singer Maggie Ryder) and Behind close doors (in 1980).

Their drummer left in 1980:

SECRET AFFAIR #3
1980-?
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
David Cairns
guitar
Dennis Smith
bass
Paul Bultitude
drums

But they still released a 3rd album, Business as usual, before parting ways finally in May 1982.

CHICKEN SHACK (again)

In 1986, Dave surprisingly rejoins Chicken Shack:

CHICKEN SHACK #?
1986-?
Stan Webb
vocals, guitar
Robbie Blunt
guitar, vocals
Jan Connolly
bass
Dave Wilkinson
keyboards
John Gunzell
drums

But he had to leave after a while due to health problems.

AND THEN...

Dave also plays with Chicken Shack from time to time, when he is available (it seems he rejoined the band in 2008, but can´t find info). He also plays in a Bruce Springsteen tribute band, and formed his own jazz trio, called Winthrop´s Jazz Bollocks.

SECRET AFFAIR (again)

In June 2002, Page & Cairns reform the last lineup of Secret Affair for 3 gigs:

SECRET AFFAIR #?
Jun 02
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
David Cairns
guitar
Dennis Smith
bass
Paul Bultitude
drums

And again, in June 2003, Secret Affair reforms for a special gig to promote their new compilation, Time for action - the anthology:

SECRET AFFAIR #?
Jun 03
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
David Cairns
guitar
Dennis Smith
bass
Paul Bultitude
drums

This concert was filmed and later released on DVD, as Live @ The Scala.

IAN PAGE AND THE AFFAIR

Ian Page formed his own band, called Ian Page And The Affair around 1999. In 2002, he brings his past mate Dave Winthrop.

This was their lineup in 2004:

IAN PAGE BAND #?
2004
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
Jel Lee
guitar
Ian Jones
bass
Andy Brush
sax, percussion
Steve Rinaldi
trombone, percussion
Bob Clarke
drums

SECRET AFFAIR (again)

In April 2006, Page & Cairns reform Secret Affair again for a benefit gig with a couple of new players:

SECRET AFFAIR #?
Apr 06
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
David Cairns
guitar
Nick Abnett
bass
Simon Hanson
drums

IAN PAGE AND THE AFFAIR (again)

This was Ian Page And The Affair around 2006:

IAN PAGE BAND #?
2006
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
Jel Lee
guitar
Ian Jones
bass
Andy Brush
sax, percussion

QUESTIONS:

01. Did Dave play with Chicken Shack around 1970-71?

02. I need to find more info about sessions for Stray Cats and Jonathan Perkins.

03. I think the info on Supertramp is not accurate. Maybe Dave joined when David Palmer and Robert Millar were in the band. Can someone help, please?
