BIOGRAPHY:
Great sax and flute player, Dave Winthrop (nicknamed Winnie) was born on November 27th, 1948, in Camden, New Jersey, but emigrated to England when he was 8.
THE MOOCHE
The Mooche was a band from Chelmsford:
They recorded just one single in 1969 for the Pye label, ´Hot smoke and sassafras / Seen through a light´, produced by John Schroeder, but don´t know if this was made by the musicians listed above, apart from Dave. Does anybody know?

SUPERTRAMP
Winthrop joined Supertramp in 1970:
The band was to record their first album, but for some reason, Dave Winthrop didn´t play on it.
But he played in their 2nd album, Indelibly stamped, and some live songs can be found in the movie Extremes (although they don't appear in the soundtrack released).
In February 1973, all the members left Hodgson & Davies alone, who carried on with a new lineup.

CHICKEN SHACK
In 1977, Stan Webb resurrects mythical band Chicken Shack:
They recorded an album, The creeper, with help from Tony Ashton.
After a while, Martinez left, and his replacement is Ray Knott, Spevock´s old mate in Babe Ruth:
but Knott left the band very soon.
Steve York joined Chicken Shack around 1978, replacing Ray Knott:
This lineup released a very good album in 1978, That's the way we are, before Spevock left them in 1979.
For a tour in 1979, the drum seat in Chicken Shack was filled by Louis Borenius:
In 1979, all the members (except Stan Webb, of course) left the band.

THE YOUNG BUCKS
I still have to find proper info about Dave playing with The Young Bucks. I don´t know if it´s my mistake, but were The Bucks and The Young Bucks the same band? I know many members are the same, but can´t say it for sure. And I guess there were more lineups with Dave in the band (probably with Seb Shelton at the same time). Help, please!
THE BUCKS
In 1979, Dave Winthrop joins The Bucks:
But they split after a few months, in July 1979.

QUESTIONS:
01. Did Dave play with Chicken Shack around 1970-71?
02. I need to find more info about sessions for Stray Cats and Jonathan Perkins.
03. I think the info on Supertramp is not accurate. Maybe Dave joined when David Palmer and Robert Millar were in the band. Can someone help, please?

ReplyDeleteHi, Dave Soars
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this comment. I'd like to ask you some things about Mooche, about the single and the musicians. Could you write me by email at molympus1@gmail.com, please? Thanks anyway.
Working with Dave whilst in The Affair was a pleasure, he's a great bloke and a great player, I hope an opportunity will arise to work with him again.
