BIOGRAPHY:

Keyboardist supreme, Jon Lord was born Jonathan Douglas Lord in Leicester, England on June 9th, 1941.

This page is not complete, but I wanted to publish it soon as my tribute to Jon. You´ll find that the discography is far from complete, and I´m missing many of Jon Lord solo ventures after his definitive retirement from Deep Purple, but I´ll be including the additional info as soon as I can.

BILL ASHTON COMBO

Around 1962, Jon Lord joins his first band, a jazz outfit called Bill Ashton Combo:

RED BLUDD´S BLUESICIANS

Red Bludd´s Bluesicians were the same band as Don Wilson Quartet, but changed their name when they played r&b instead of more jazz-oriented repertoire. This was still in 1963:

THE GREAT ORGAN-ISED

When the Don Wilson Quartet joined forces with vocalist Art Wood in 1963, they changed their name initially to New Art Wood Combo, later changed to The Great Organ-ised:

THE ARTWOODS

The Artwoods was formed when several members of Red Bludd´s Bluesicians were joined by Keef Hartley and Malcolm Poole, around the end of 1964:

After an album, Keef left them (to join John Mayall) in April 1967, being replaced by Colin Martin.

They released an album, Art Gallery, as well as an EP, Jazz in jeans. Now, Art Gallery has been reissued on CD with 14 bonus tracks!! (including that EP).

100 Oxford Street is a compilation with several tracks from their album, plus several singles, from the period 1964-1966. It has 16 tracks, including one track with this funny title: ´I'm looking for a saxophonist, doubling French horn, wearing size 37 boots´, co-written by Keef.

This was the second lineup for The Artwoods, in 1967:

ROUNDABOUT

Roundabout was a project conceived by Chris Curtis that was the seed for Deep Purple, although Chris Curtis was soon out of it, as well as Dave Curtis. This was the first proper lineup, in March 1968:

ROUNDABOUT #1
Mar 68
êThe Maze
Rod Evans

Ritchie Blackmore

Nick Simper

Jon Lord

Bobby Woodman

But Bobby Woodman also left immediately, and Rod Evans brought Ian Paice, his bandmate from The Maze.

This was the second edition of Roundabout, still in March 1968:

DEEP PURPLE

In April 1968, Deep Purple plays their debut:

But, after 3 albums (Shades of Deep Purple, The book of Talyesin and Deep Purple) and 15 months together, Evans and Simper left.

In July 1969, Deep Purple gets two new members, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover:

DEEP PURPLE #2
Jul 69-Jun 73
Ian Gillan
vocals
Ritchie Blackmore
guitar
Roger Glover
bass
Jon Lord
keyboards
Ian Paice
drums

This is the classical lineup for Deep Purple. They recorded several masterpieces for any hard rock aficionado. They were so fantastic, love ´em! The albums were: Concerto for group and orchestra (recorded live with an orchestra and released in January 1970), the magistral In rock (June 1970), Fireball (September 1971), the legendary Machine head (May 1972), the immortal double live Made in Japan (December 1972), and their last effort, Who do we think we are (released in March 1973).

But in July 1973, Gillan and Glover left the band after some inner tensions. They needed to find appropiate replacements for them (and they succeeded in that).

In July 1973, we have Deep Purple mark #3, with superb newcomers David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes:

DEEP PURPLE #3
Jun 73-May 75
David Coverdale
vocals
Ritchie Blackmore
guitar
Glenn Hughes
bass, vocals
Jon Lord

Ian Paice

They released the albums Burn (February 1974) and Stormbringer (December 1974).

And then, in May 1975, founder member Ritchie Blackmore announced his departure (to start his own project Rainbow).

In June 1975, after trying with different guitarists (such as Clem Clempson), Deep Purple announced that Tommy Bolin was the new member:

DEEP PURPLE #4
Jun 75-Mar 76
David Coverdale
vocals
Tommy Bolin
guitar
Glenn Hughes
bass, vocals
Jon Lord
keyboards
Ian Paice

They only released one album Come taste the band in December 1975, with a quite evident change in style.

In March 1976, the band announced their split (although it would resurrect their Mark #2 many years later in April 1984, as we´re going to read).

ASHTON & LORD

After leaving Family, Tony Ashton teamed with his mate Jon Lord. They recorded an album with lots of friends and guests, First of the big bands. Some guests in the album are: Jim Cregan (guitar), Jerry Donahue (guitar), Peter Frampton (guitar), Pat Donaldson (bass), Dick Parry (sax), Howie Casey (horns), Dave Caswell (trumpet), Mike Davies (trumpet), John Mumford (trombone), Frank Ricotti (percussion), Carmine Appice (drums), Terry Cox (drums), Ian Paice (drums), and backing vocals by Madeline Bell, Tony Ferguson, Jimmy Helms, Kenny Rowe, Graham White, Joanne Williams, Roger Willis.

The album was released in March 1974, but some months later, Ashton & Lord wanted to play a live concert to promote it. That's when they assemble an all-star lineup:

ASHTON & LORD #1

The concert was held on September 15th, 1974. A live album from those concerts was released almost 20 years later. It's BBC Radio One Live in concert.

PAICE ASHTON & LORD

Although the band name implies a trio, Paice Ashton & Lord was a fabulous quintet, formed in August 1976, with help from Bernie Marsden and Paul Martinez:

Being a quintet, the band expanded to an 11-piece for 5 concerts in England during March and April 1978:

WHITESNAKE

In August 1978, Jon Lord rejoins his mates David Coverdale and Bernie Marsden in Whitesnake:

WHITESNAKE #3
Aug 78-Jul 79
David Coverdale
vocals
Micky Moody
guitar
Bernie Marsden

Neil Murray
bass
Jon Lord

Dave Dowle

But Dowle left the band in July 1979, and an old mate joins, Ian Paice.

In August 1979, with Ian Paice´s arrival, Whitesnake gets their most classical lineup:

WHITESNAKE #4
Aug 79-Jan 82
David Coverdale
vocals
Micky Moody
guitar
Bernie Marsden
guitars
Neil Murray
bass
Jon Lord
keyboards
Ian Paice
drums

A superb band, both live and in the studio albums. But Dowle left the band in July 1979, and an old mate joins, Ian Paice. In January 1982, the band starts their first hiatus for some months.

PETE YORK BAND

During March and April 1982, Pete York was touring promoting his video Super Drumming, with an all-star band. Jon Lord also joined, as his main band, Whitesnake, was hybernated. The band was called Olympic Rock & Blues Circus:

PETE YORK BAND #?
Mar 82-Apr 82
Chris Farlowe
vocals
John Marshall
guitar
Colin Hodgkinson
bass
Jon Lord
keyboards
Jeff Reynolds
trumpet
James Campagnola
sax
Andre Pet
trombone
Pete York
drums
Charlie Eichert
drums

They played jazz-rock and oldies covers in the small clubs circuit during March and April 1982. They released one album with a slightly different lineup, although Colin doesn't play there (the album was released in 1981 under the name Olympic Rock & Roll Circus, with Brian Auger instead of Lord, and Steve Richardson instead of Colin).

WHITESNAKE (again)

When Whitesnake awakes, Neil Murray and Ian Paice had gone with Gary Moore, and Jon Lord asks Colin Hodkingson to join the band. This was in September 1982:

WHITESNAKE #5
Sep 82-Jan 84
David Coverdale
vocals
Micky Moody
guitar
Mel Galley
guitars
Colin Hodgkinson
bass
Jon Lord
keyboards
Cozy Powell
drums

A superb band!

There is a video from this lineup: Whitesnake commandos - Donington 1983 (1983, EMI). They played in Spain, with Meat Loaf opening the concert.

They only released an album, Slide it in. But there are two different editions of the album. The European one (released on EMI) was recorded with this lineup, but the American edition (released on Geffen) contains all the guitar parts re-released by new guitar axe John Sykes, and it seems that Colin parts were re-recorded by his replacement, Neil Murray.

In January 1984, Whitesnake lineup changed again, and Colin Hodgkinson and Mel Galley left the band.

In January 1984, Neil Murray rejoins Whitesnake, and the new guitar hero is the spectacular John Sykes:

WHITESNAKE #6
Jan 84-Apr 84
David Coverdale
vocals
John Sykes
guitar
Mel Galley
guitars
Neil Murray
bass
Jon Lord
keyboards
Cozy Powell

But Jon Lord left very soon, in April 1984.

PETE YORK BAND (again)

This is another different lineup for Pete York Band, but I haven´t details about the period they played together:

PETE YORK BAND #?
?
Ray Fenwick

Steve Fearn
guitar
Charlie McCracken
bass
Bill Coleman

Jon Lord

DEEP PURPLE (again)

In April 1984, after many years of rumours about Deep Purple coming back to life, it finally happened, with the members of Mark #2:

DEEP PURPLE #5
Apr 84-May 89
Ian Gillan
vocals
Ritchie Blackmore
guitar
Roger Glover
bass
Jon Lord
keyboards
Ian Paice
drums

Even though they suffered criticism, I think their new debut album, Perfect strangers was a great album. It was followed by House of blue light (not so good in my opinion, released in January 1987), and the double live album Nobody´s perfect released in August 1988.

And then, the old frictions inside the band reappeared, and Ian Gillan announced he was leaving them in May 1989.

PETE YORK BAND (again)

In October and November 1989, we can find another edition of The Olympic Rock & Blues Circus, led by Pete York:

PETE YORK BAND #?
1989
Chris Farlowe
vocals
Miller Anderson
guitar
Colin Hodgkinson

Jon Lord
keyboards
Tony Ashton

Still in October and November 1989, The Olympic Rock & Blues Circus included Zoot Money instead of Tony Ashton:

PETE YORK BAND #?
1989
Chris Farlowe
vocals
Miller Anderson
guitar
Colin Hodgkinson
bass
Jon Lord
keyboards
Zoot Money
keyboards, vocals
Pete York

DEEP PURPLE (again)

After six months trying to get a suitable new singer, Ritchie Blackmore brings his ex-lead singer in Rainbow, Joe Lynn Turner, to become the new Deep Purple vocalist instead of Ian Gillan:

DEEP PURPLE #6
Dec 89-Aug 92
Joe Lynn Turner
vocals
Ritchie Blackmore
guitar
Roger Glover
bass
Jon Lord
keyboards
Ian Paice
drums

They released the album Slaves and masters in October 1990, but Turner left soon, in August 1992, and the band asked Ian Gillan to rejoin, which he finally did.

PETE YORK BAND (again)

In March 1990, Pete York´s new band is called Daddy & The Steamers, now with great singer Roger Chapman as frontman:

PETE YORK BAND #?
Mar 90
Roger Chapman
vocals
Miller Anderson

Colin Hodgkinson

In June 1990, we have a new edition of Daddy & The Steamers:

PETE YORK BAND #?

Miller Anderson
guitar
Colin Hodgkinson

Jon Lord

During July and August 1990, we have a new edition of The Olympus Rhythm & Blues Circus:

PETE YORK BAND #?

DEEP PURPLE (again)

In August 1992, we have Deep Purple mark #2 alive again:

DEEP PURPLE #7
Aug 92-Nov 93
Ian Gillan
vocals
Ritchie Blackmore
guitar
Roger Glover
bass
Jon Lord
keyboards
Ian Paice
drums

After a new album, The battle rages on, released in July 1993, now it´s Ritchie Blackmore who would definitely leave the band in November 1993.

In December 1993, Joe Satriani joins Deep Purple as a temporary help for the band while they find a permanent guitarist:

DEEP PURPLE #8
Dec 93-Jul 94
Ian Gillan
vocals
Joe Satriani
guitar
Roger Glover
bass
Jon Lord
keyboards
Ian Paice
drums

They didn´t record any studio material, but their concerts were very good, with Satriani fitting perfectly into the band.

In July 1994, Satriani leaves and Steve Morse arrives.

In November 1994, the great Steve Morse joins Deep Purple:

DEEP PURPLE #9
Nov 94-Feb 02
Ian Gillan
vocals
Steve Morse
guitar
Roger Glover
bass
Jon Lord
keyboards
Ian Paice
drums

Their first album by them was Purpendicular, followed by Abandon, as well as several live albums.

I was lucky to see the band live; I enjoyed the show a lot.

And then, another surprise arrives when founder member Jon Lord was leaving, and Don Airey was announced as their new recruit. They embarked into a farewell tour, but health problems forced that some concerts were already held with Don Airey.

I felt shocked when I learned that he passed away in London, England on July 16th, 2012 due to a pulmonary embolism. He was also fighting against a pancreatic cancer. Rest in peace.

Deep Purple´s Made in Japan was the first hard rock album I ever heard, and was instantly captivated by their sound. All five men were perfect instrumentists (you can consider Ian Gillan´s voice as another instrument - I got shivers when I heard his battles against lead guitar and organ). This album influenced lots of my musical tastes, and I've always enjoyed B3 Hammond sound a lot, no matter if it appears on rock albums or jazz albums, and Jon Lord is the one who made me love that instrument. Rest in peace, Jon, and thanks for all your music contribution. You´ll never be forgotten.

TRIBUTES TO JON LORD

  • From Pete York (sent to me on July 23rd, 2012):

  • It came as a great shock to hear about Jon. In spite of the fact that everybody told me that this cancer was the worst, I somehow didn't expect this to happen yet. My wife and I both loved our old friend very much and hoped that we'd see him again. I spoke to him on the phone during his illness but never got to see him face to face.
Always such a distinguished looking guy, maybe he didn't want us to see how this horrible disease had changed his appearance. Anyway we talked and even joked. The funny conversations we had after shows , in the car or on the phone are warm memories, although I can't remember the details of every witty line.
We made some great music and he brought me into his world, because I could read music a little, and made a better musician out of me. We knew each other since the end of the 60s and I will miss him very much. He was just beginning to be recognised as one of the Uks leading COMPLETE musicians. This recognition should go on so that more people hear what he created and why he composed the way he did. He had emotions and most of the music which is fed to people today does not. Listen and love.
