This is intended to be a homage to very many musicians I've loved since I started listening to music. My intention is to tell what I know about them, hoping that those people who like them too, will help me fill numerous gaps, which I may have in their careers and discographies. Sorry, but there are no MP3 audio files here at all, just info (and love for the musicians).

Caleb Quaye (guitar)

BIOGRAPHY:

Very talented guitarist, as well as keyboardist, Caleb Quaye was born on October 9th, 1948 in London, England in a musical family as his father was a professional jazz musician (Cab Kaye) and his brothers are also musicians (Terri Quaye and Finley Quaye). He started playing piano, followed by drums and guitar.

Some years ago, Eric Clapton attended the David Letterman TV show. When Letterman complimented him as the best guitarist in the world, Clapton replied that, "no, a guy named Caleb Quaye is the best guitarist in the world!". That says it all...

Caleb also worked in 1966 with Mick Jagger, who was acting as producer in some album (does anybody know which album, please?). He also played in demos for P P Arnold, Paul McCartney, The Hollies or Al Kooper.

THE SOUND CASTLES

This was the first band featuring Caleb Quaye, and formed while he still was at high school:

There's an album called Rare tracks, where we can find Caleb playing in some songs.

CALEB

After the breakup of Bluesology, Caleb Quaye released a single in 1967 under the name Caleb: ´Baby your phrasing is bad / Woman of distinction´. He used session musicians, including the late Dave Hynes (from The Mirage, later to join Spencer Davis Group and Steve Marriott band), and probably Elton John is on keyboards. Both songs later resurfaced in several compilations.

BREAD AND BEER BAND

In 1969, Elton (still Reg Dwight) and Caleb made a private album (as far as I know, it's still unreleased) under the name Bread and Beer Band:

The only song released from it was one single, 'Dick Barton Theme/Breakdown blues' (1969, Decca; reissued in 1973), which was part later of some compilations.

ELTON JOHN BAND (again)

In July 1969, Elton John recorded some tracks for BBC in two different sessions, both times backed by 3/4 of Hookfoot:

HOOKFOOT

Hookfoot

Around April 1970, Caleb assembles his own band, called Hookfoot, reuniting several session musicians for artists on the DJM label (being Elton John the most famous of them):

The band started recording with Elton John at the end of 1967, and backed Elton in different concerts, as well as playing in some of Elton´s early albums.

ELTON JOHN BAND (again)

In April 1970, just a few days after his 2nd album Elton John was released, Elton played some sessions for the BBC. At that time, he still had no band, so he used his friends from Hookfoot, as well as The Chanter Sisters for background vocals:

Dave Glover

Roger Pope

Ian Duck

Doreen Chanter

Irene Chanter

Elton John returned the favour to the Chanter Sisters playing in their album Birds of a feather.

Elton John plays another special concert for the BBC in May 1970, with Hookfoot as backing band (although Dee Murray & Nigel Olsson also appear in 1 song):

HOOKFOOT (again)

Hookfoot

Hookfoot

Hookfoot gets a new member around 1971:

HOOKFOOT #2
1971-?
Caleb Quaye
guitar, vocals, keyboards
Ian Duck
harmonica, vocals
Peter Ross
harmonica, vocals
Dave Glover
bass
Roger Pope
drums, vocals

They release their first album, Hookfoot. It comprises songs composed by Caleb, plus renditions of Stephen Stills and Neil Young songs. This first album was very innovative with Caleb switching between guitar and keyboards. It even included a great piano-based jazz instrumental (´Wim Wam´) along with a killer tune (´Movies´) that starts out with Quaye and Duck on acoustic and finishes with Wishbone Ash style double-lead electric.

Hookfoot´s lineup changes a bit, with the arrival of a new guitarist, Bob Kulick, who later collaborated with many bands, such as Kiss, Meat Loaf, and with his own band, Skull:

HOOKFOOT #3
1972-1973
Caleb Quaye
guitar, vocals, keyboards
Ian Duck
harmonica, vocals
Bob Kulick
guitar, vocals
Dave Glover
bass
Roger Pope
drums, vocals

The second album was called Good Times a-Comin´. It´s more straight-ahead rock with Caleb playing through a Leslie amp a lot.

The personnel in Hookfoot changes again, as Bob Kulick leaves the band. The bassist, Dave Glover, also left them, and for a while, they had the special collaboration of superb guitarist (and Caleb's friend) Mick Grabham, playing bass for one month until they got a permanent member:

HOOKFOOT #4
1973
Caleb Quaye
guitar, vocals, keyboards
Ian Duck
harmonica, vocals
Roger Pope
drums, vocals

Fred Gandy got the job as Hookfoot´s new bassist:

HOOKFOOT #5
1973-1974
Caleb Quaye
guitar, vocals, keyboards
Ian Duck
harmonica, vocals
Fred Gandy
bass
Roger Pope
drums, vocals

They finally split up in 1974, and Caleb went to the USA, working as a session musician.

Many years later, a live album appeared: Hookfoot Live In Memphis. It´s not a release through A&M. It is a specialty CD from some German company of a 1973 concert (probably opening for Yes). It was recorded by this last Hookfoot lineup.

Already covered (2): Mick Grabham, Roger Pope
To be covered (6): Ian Duck, Fred Gandy, Dave Glover, Bob Kulick, Bruce Roberts, Peter Ross

MORE FACTS

Caleb has collaborated with Paul McCartney, but I don't know where and when. Any help?

WHERE IS HE NOW?

In 1982, Caleb's life changed completely, and he became a musician/evangelist. He is currently serving as the Chairman of the National Worship Committee and was officially appointed as National Foursquare Music Minister in the Spring of 1995.

The National Worship and Music Ministries was going to release their first CD, due for Christmas 1997, entitled The Coming King. It was supposed that Caleb will be present in that album, but I haven´t been able to confirm this point. Does anybody know, please?

Caleb has also written his autobiography, called A voice louder than rock & roll.

The CD release by Sequel includes a few live bonus tracks, with Manchild (Dick´s own band in 1973: James Litherland, Billy Smith, Dave Rose and Theodore Thunder). But there´s more... a different CD release by Castle adds 2 more studio cuts by Manchild.

With an exquisite (and unexpected in those times) backing band: Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman (from Yes), Paul Keogh (guitar), Les Hurdle (bass) and Clem Cattini (drums, an historical name in the beginning of UK rock'n'roll scene).
