BIOGRAPHY:

Magnificent sax player, he was astounding. He could blow two horns (tenor and soprano saxophones) at the same time. You had to watch him to believe it!

He has one of the most prolific careers in rock and blues, and I´ve tried my best to make this page as accurate as possible to honour his superb contribution to music.

Dick Heckstall-Smith

He was born Richard Malden Heckstall-Smith on September 26th,1934 in Ludlow (near Wales). He started playing clarinet, but then, he switched to saxophone.

Dick started playing in school bands around 1952 (Dartington School Jazz Band), later joining to his University Jazz Band where he won a silver cup in 1955 in the Cambridge University Jazz Band competition. He toured with them in 1956 (until he was replaced by Dick´s friend, Art Themen).

SANDY BROWN´S JAZZ MEN

Clarinet player Sandy Brown was one of the judges at Cambridge and hired Dick for his own combo, Sandy Brown´s Jazz Men, but I don´t have more info about his tenure in the band. He recorded his first tracks in the summer of 1956.

In September 1963, Bond replaces a guitarist (John McLaughlin) with a sax player, his mate Dick Heckstall-Smith:

That´s when they changed their name from Graham Bond Quartet to Graham Bond Organization.

They released a single, 'Long tall Shorty'/'Long legged baby' in May 1964. They also played in some recordings by guitarist Ernest Ranglin, credited to Ernest Ranglin And The GB´s, although Heckstall-Smith doesn´t appear in these recordings.

They appear in the sampler Rhythm and blues, contributing with 5 tracks.

They also appear in the movie Gonks go beat making playback of one of their songs, as well as appearing in the soundtrack album. The band also appeared in a TV program backing visiting star Marvin Gaye in November 1964.

Jack Bruce was finally fired in September 1965. But he still appears in their next album, There´s a Bond between us, to be released in December 1965.

Again in a strange move, Bond replaces a bassist with a trumpet player:

They released some tracks with this lineup that appeared in some singles.

In February 1966, they toured with The Who, appearing in the B-side of a single by the band, and surprisingly credited to The Who Orchestra. The track is 'Waltz for a pig', the B-side for The Who´s own 'Substitute'.

Finally, Ginger Baker leaves, being replaced by a young Jon Hiseman:

They started recording an album, but it was finally shelved. In 1970, these recordings appeared inside the double album Solid Bond.

In summer 1967, they become a quartet again.

The Graham Bond Organization becomes a quartet again briefly in the summer of 1967.

JOHN MAYALL & THE BLUESBREAKERS

Following that, John McVie leaves the band in August 1967 to rejoin old Mayall bandmates Peter Green and Mick Fleetwood in order to form the fantastic blues-rock band Fleetwood Mac. Rip Kant also leaves, and the new lineup in August 1967 is:

They recorded a track in September 1967, 'Suspicions (part one)' included in the fantastic collection of outtakes, Thru the years, and 'Suspicions (part 2)' appears in another collection of outtakes, Looking back.

Paul Williams only stayed two months, until October 1967. The bassist role was filled in a very short period with three different musicians.

Keith Tillman joined in October 1967 until February 1968:

With this lineup, John Mayall performed his first American tour, playing with the Steve Miller Band in January 1968 at the Cafe Au Go Go in New York.

They released two consecutive live albums, recorded in 1968, Diary of a band, vol. 1 and Diary of a band, vol. 2. These live albums are a unusual experience. They can´t be considered the typical live album. They include interviews, funny parts, and long jamming around dense blues numbers. I like them, although the second volume contains more musical content. Some parts are really, really very good, although the albums never got great acclaim.

Next bassist to join, in March 1968, is a very young Andy Fraser:

They released Bare wires, recorded on April 1968. Another unreleased track, 'Knockers step forward' appear in the fantastic compilation of unreleased material Thru the years.

It's interesting to note that this lineup was the seed for a great band, Colosseum. Reeves, Heckstall-Smith and Hiseman went to form this band when Mayall changed the lineup. Only Mick Taylor remained with Mayall. This was July 1968.

But Jimmy Roche didn't stay in the band for long.

Roche was replaced by another great guitarist, Jimmy Litherland:

They released two albums in 1969. The first one is Those who are about to die, it was produced by Gerry Bron and Tony Reeves, and recorded in the winter of 1968.

Their 2nd album is the superb Valentyne suite. It was recorded during Spring and Summer 1969.

This lineup appeared in the rock movie Super Session, featuring great and future stars, such as Led Zeppelin, Buddy Miles, Stephen Stills, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Juicy Lucy (with Chris Mercer and Glen Campbell) and jazz player Roland Kirk. The concerts were held during two days in March 1969.

But Jim Litherland left the band in September 1969.

The definitive replacement for the guitar duties comes in October 1969, Clem Clempson:

He even overdubbed the guitar parts for the American edition of Valentyne suite.

But this time, it was Tony Reeves who left the band before Summer 1970.

Bassist Tony Reeves had left the band before Summer 1970, and Louis Cennamo joins them:

They played some big festivals (including Bath Festival in June 1970), but in the middle of recording their new studio album, Cennamo left. Anyway, he still appears in several tracks of Daughter of time.

Two new, but experienced members arrive to the band:

Their music was jazz/rock, where every instrumentist played a very important role in their music, but with Clem's arrival, they had changed slightly into more rocking ways.

Daughter of time is a very strong album, including a live track, basically a drum solo, 'The time machine' (recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall, July 1970). The CD edition includes one bonus track, the instrumental 'Jumping off the sun'. Apart from the band members (the bass parts were recorded by Louis Cennamo and Mark Clarke, depending on the tracks), there is a guest appearance by Barbara Thompson (flute, sax, vocals) who used to play with the band (she´s Jon Hiseman´s wife).

After this album, they abandoned their record label, Vertigo, switching to Bronze.

Next release was a double live album, Colosseum live, recorded in Manchester & Brighton, March 1971. Originally a 2LP, the CD release (only 1CD) even includes a bonus track, 'I can't live without you'. It's a very powerful album, with lenghty renditions of their own tracks, plus covers of Jack Bruce ('Rope ladder to the moon'), Graham Bond ('Walking in the park'), T-Bone Walker ('Stormy Monday blues'), etc.

They toured the States supporting Deep Purple in the summer of 1971.

Soon after, they broke, and their new label, Bronze, released a compilation, The Collectors Colosseum, with several unreleased cuts.

In August 1971, Jack Bruce starts a new solo tour, billed as Jack Bruce & Friends, with several TV appearances first, followed by concerts in England and Scotland.

In one of the TV gigs in Aug 71, Dick Heckstall-Smith replaces his friend Art Themen.

Graham Bond leaves them in Nov 71.

DICK HECKSTALL-SMITH BAND (aka MANCHILD)

After Colosseum broke up, Dick started working on his first solo album, along with using some unreleased material he had. All his mates from Colosseum appeared there, and Jon Hiseman produced the album.

Rumour has it about Dick asking John Bonham (drummer in Led Zeppelin) to form a joint band.

After that, Dick formed his own band in 1973 to promote the album A story ended:

A magnificent band. Theodore Thunder was 18 at that time!

There is some concert recorded by the BBC and there you can notice the superb musicianship in the band.

They toured Europe, and then travelled to the States for another tour supporting Fleetwood Mac and Deep Purple, and changing their name to Manchild.

They started recording a new album, but Dick´s health problems sadly prevented the album was finished.

AND THEN...

Dick retired from playing sax for at least 3 years, until his health improved enough for playing and touring again. Meanwhile, he took a PhD in Sociology.

BIG CHIEF

Dick started working with Big Chief around 1976, I think.

Big Chief was a jazzy band formed in 1976. When Tony Reeves joined them in 1979, this was the personnel list:

HAMBURG BLUES BAND

Dick starts playing with them in 1992, and kept on doing that during many years, but I haven´t been able to clear the names for lineups, except for a couple of them (see below).

BARRY VENN & THE DOLPHINS

Barry Venn changed the band name, as it started to be his own band without a stable lineup, only friends and colleagues that played with him. Clem Clempson appeared several times with them. In September 1993, the lineup was:

Cities of the heart is a superb double live album, recorded in Cologne, November 2/3 1993, in that celebration. It features an all-star lineup. 1994 was the year where an unexpected fact happens. As the Colosseum albums were being succesful in their new CD reissues, Jon Hiseman thinks it's time for Colosseum to live again, with their most famous lineup:

Absolutely brilliant!!! They're back with a vengeance!! These concerts are nothing else than a complete masterpiece. The video shows them in great shape, and I'm willing to say that, to me, Colosseum never sounded as fantastic as now! Everybody in the band performs a superb work.

The CD release by Sequel includes a few live bonus tracks, with Manchild (Dick´s own band in 1973: James Litherland, Billy Smith, Dave Rose and Theodore Thunder). But there´s more... a different CD release by Castle adds 2 more studio cuts by Manchild.

Comments: This is a blues compilation, but it includes 6 unreleased tracks. Artist list is: Stan Webb's Chicken Shack, Dave Kelly, Chris Barber, Zoot Money & Colin Hodgkinson, Paul Jones, Richie Milton and The Lowdown, Paul Lamb and The Kingsnakes, The Blues Band (with the song 'Fat city'), Gets/Z Loose, Duffy Power with Dick Heckstall-Smith, Norman Beaker and The Indigo Allstars, The Frank White Band, John Pearson, Gordon Smith, The Hideaway Blues Band. The track by Zoot Money & Colin Hodgkinson is one of the previously unreleased ones. It really contains two songs: 'Geneva' (Trad./Korner) and 'My good luck soul' (written by Hudson). Its duration is 6'15", and it was recorded at Buxton, April 1994. I guess it's a live track (I don't have the album, probably taken from an Alexis Korner memorial concert). If anyone wants to know, the other previously unreleased tracks are the ones by: Paul Jones, Paul Lamb and The Kingsnakes, Gets/Z Loose, Duffy Power with Dick Heckstall-Smith (the track is 'Everyday since you've been gone'), Norman Beaker and The Indigo Allstars.

I'M PRETTY SURE NOT. MIKE FALANA IS THE ONLY TRUMPET PLAYER I KNOW OF THAT WORKED WITH THEM.

APART FROM JAMES LITHERLAND, YOU MEAN? AS FAR AS I KNOW CLEM SANG LEAD FOR A WHILE AFTER JIM LEFT AND BEFORE CHRIS STARTED.

Regarding the 3 Space blog "This was a trio led by Dick around 1984 until 1986 with guitarist John James, but can´t find info about the other player, the keyboardist". In answer to this, the keyboard player was Dave Moore. I saw them in a small pub just outside Exeter and, being an avid fan of Dick, grabbed one of the advertising posters off the wall and got them all to autograph it ! I stood directly in front of Dick while he played. Absolutely amazing and a night that will live with me forever !
