ISOTOPE
Isotope was formed in June 1972 by Gary Boyle. The original concept was having two drummers (being Clive Thacker the other member), but this never materialized:
But Sulzmann didn´t stay too much, and De Souza returned to Brazil (he would rejoin later, as we´re going to read).
This was Isotope around 1973, until March 1974:
They released their first album, Isotope produced by the band, along with manager Tim Sharman.
The band was ´frozen´ for some time, as Boyle and Morris joined Stomu Yamash´ta East Wind from July 1973 to February 1974.
But, as soon as the band was resurrected, Clyne and Miller left the band in March 1974.

ISOTOPE (again)
Gary Boyle was voted ´New Star of ´74´ in a Melody Maker jazz poll, also #3 British Guitarist and # World Guitarist, and Isotope was voted 4th in the small group category.
In May 1974, Isotope reforms with the mighty Hugh Hopper and non-professional musician Laurence Scott:
In May 1975, original member Aureo De Souza rejoins Isotope:
Around June 1975, Jeff Seopardie is asked to join Isotope, in order to augment their live potential. The band had met Seopardie when he was a member of Pete Atkin Band who opened for Isotope for most of their 1974 tour:
In December 1975, Laurence Scott left Isotope, being replaced by Frank Roberts in time for a German tour:
But the lineup collapsed very soon, when Hugh Hopper left too in March 1976 after they started the sessions for Isotope´s third album, Deep end where Hopper only appears in 1 track. After that, Gary Boyle and Nigel Morris reformed completely the band.
I´m not sure if Seopardie and De Souza were still members of the band when Frank Roberts joined. Can someone confirm me that point, please? They maybe had left in August 1975.
In 1976, this was the personnel for Isotope:
They recorded Deep end. After that, the band fell apart, with founding member Nigel Morris leaving.

Hi, Al here. I can help fill in a gap re Gary's tenure with Jim Mullen. Keyboard player was Bradford guy called Howard Mealor, don't know if he ever recorded with them but he certainly gigged with Jim while Gary was part of it.
ReplyDeleteI know this from many conversations with Howard whilst I played bass in his band 'The Prize' in the early nineties. Howard himself is a fabulous musician and composer and apparently now living in Scandanavia somewhere. I know he has a website so maybe there is more info there but not sure. Hope this has been some help and it's been a really interesting read.
Thanks for your comment. Everything helps, believe me. I'm glad you enjoyed the site.
DeleteYou mentioned something about the Gary Boyle Band around 2009 and asked for other members.
ReplyDeletePlease see below:
http://www.jazzyorkshire.org/calendar/show_gig1.php?gig_id=2520&city=Sheffield&gig_tags=modern
I thought I had been to a gig with a sax player and a drummer called Tony Faulkner and started questioning myself because I was sure it had been in 2008. Was I wrong? Seems not! I eventually managed to find the listing for the gig I attended:
Scroll down to Wednesday 10th September 2008
http://www.jazzyorkshire.org/calendar/jy_cal_sep08.html#2502
I can't remember who played bass or keyboards at that gig but Tony Faulkner was DEFINITELY on drums.
I remember the gig very well because I was blown away by this amazing guitarist and I was sitting only a few feet away from the end of his guitar. It was over another year before I realised Gary Boyle was the guitarist in Isotope - when I found a "Live at the BBC" CD in Vinyl Exchange, Manchester - a band someone had mentioned to me years before and recommended because he thought I would like them. I could never find anything about them throughout the mid-2000s, unfortunately. As for liking them, I have all their albums now, plus The Dancer and Electric Glide, his two post-Isotope solo records. I usually include an Isotope or Boyle track on Jazz Train every other Sunday (on ALL FM - www.allfm.org - from 1pm to 3pm BST). I have seen Gary Boyle live several times now, most recently on my birthday.
Keep up the excellent work on your site.
Cheers,
Stew
