PENTANGLE
An exquisite band. Jansch and Renbourn were playing together for some time, when Jacqui McShee approached to them. With Thompson and Cox rounding the rhythm section, Pentangle started its life in 1967:
They remained together until January 1973 when Jansch left (although they would reunite several other times along the years).

In 1978, singer Polly Bolton joined Bert Jansch Band for gigs, but don´t know the names of the other players. Does anybody know?
This was the lineup for Bert Jansch Conundrum, probably around 1980:
In July 1980, they recorded some live tracks for BBC. Six of these tracks appeared later in the live album BBC Radio One live in concert.
After the demise of Bert Jansch Conundrum, Bert and Martin Jenkins continued playing together as a duo:

PENTANGLE (again)
In 1982, Pentangle reforms with the original lineup:
Terry Cox suffered an accident when the tour started, when they carried on with him. They stayed together until 1983, when Renbourn leaves.
When John Renbourn left Pentangle, Bert Jansch called his friend Mike Piggott, now playing not only guitar but also violin:
They released the album Open the door. After a while, Danny Thompson left.
Pentangle´s new bassist was Nigel Portman Smith:
They released the album In the round, and then, Terry Cox left in March 1987.

But Clements left in the summer of 1990 to devote full time to Lindisfarne.

BERT JANSCH BAND (again)
In April 1988, Bert Jansch appeared with this terrific backing band comprising some of his mates from Pentangle:
Bert Jansch also played as a trio in some festivals, probably during the 80s (anybody knows dates, please?):
Bert Jansch also played as a duo with Rod Clements, probably around the time they released the album Leather launderette (1989):
Around June 1991, Bert Jansch played duo gigs with mate Pete Kirtley:
Miller Anderson played at the Blackheath Concert Halls in South London on 13/9/93 in a bill packed of great acoustic guitarists: Bert Jansch , Davy Graham and John Renbourn. They also toured together in May 1994. Miller then went on to do several gigs supporting Bert.
In March 1998, Bert Jansch records a live album, Downunder - live Australia, with Peter Howell on bass:
In August 2005, guitar legends Bert Jansch and Davy Graham team for a couple of gigs at the Edinburgh Festival:
They also played a joint gig in December 2005.

PENTANGLE (again)
New reunion of the original Pentangle for a short tour during June and July 2008:
And again, another reunion of the original Pentangle for some gigs in June and July 2011:
Bert sadly passed away on October 5th, 2011 at Hampstead, London in England, due to cancer. As it happened with Davy Graham, Bert was also admired by many of his colleagues, such as Gordon Giltrap, Rory Gallagher, Neil Young, Al Stewart, Donovan, Mike Oldfield, Rab Noakes, Chris Simpson (Magna Carta), Andy Powell (Wishbone Ash) or Jimmy Page. Even some of them have tunes related to him:
Michael Chapman has the song ´Bert Jansch meets Frankenstein as a bonus track of the CD reissue of his album Rainmaker.
Gordon Giltrap has an EP called Janschology.
David Hughes has a track called ´Cool BJ.
There´s also a collective tribute double album called People on the highway - a Bert Jansch encomium, featuring bandmates, friends and fans such as Roy Harper, Donovan, Al Stewart, Laurence Juber, Rod Clements, the late Martin Jenkins, Ralph McTell, Rab Noakes, Duffy Power, Maggie Boyle and many others.
My first contact with Bert Jansch´s music was when, as a teenager, I bought the double LP by Pentangle´s Sweet child. I was fascinated by their rendition of Charlie Mingus´ ´Goodbye pork hat´, and I instantly became a fan. Later, I bought a vinyl copy (no CDs then) of a rare Spanish double album that contained Bert´s fantastic first album, also Rosemary lane, etc. Great, fantastic music.

- From Paul Millns (sent to me on October 11th, 2011):
- From Gary Boyle (sent to me on October 11th, 2011):
- From Luce Langridge (sent to me on October 20th, 2011):
I have been happy and lucky enough to know Bert as a friend since the early 80s. His musicianship was truly awesome. He was also a truly great person, and of the highest possible integrity - a gentleman in the purest sense. I am thankful for the lovely memories, in particular Bert & Loren's Wedding Day - a time of huge joy and celebration for this very special couple and all present. My heart goes out to Loren, Adam & Kieran at this sorrowful time.

A true original and great artist. Paul had the privilege of playing with him often in the 80’s, including some memorable nights at the Edinburgh Festival together with bassist Nigel Portman Smith. Bert also recorded “Rise and Shine” live with Paul in the studio on the album “Against the tide” in 1994. Sadly missed by so many, but with such a great musical legacy.

There will be many tributes to Bert as a musician which I would add my voice to, but I think my main memory would be of a really quiet, unassuming person, a gentleman. RIP

He was a great player and writer, I loved playing with him, a great loss.
