  • Janis Joplin Band [Dec 68-1969]
  • The Catskills [1969-?]
  • Petula Clark Band [1971-1987]
  • Peter Allen Band

BIOGRAPHY:

Prolific drummer, he appears as sessionmen in many albums, as we're going to read. I haven't been so lucky at finding info about his bands. He was born in New York.

THE CATSKILLS

First band I've been able to trace with him was The Catskills.

The Catskills was a big band. This was their lineup at the end of 1965:

THE CATSKILLS #?

JANIS JOPLIN BAND

In December 1968, Janis Joplin starts her new group, Kozmic Blues Band:

But in January 1969, Bill King had to leave the band to fulfill military duties.

In January 1969, Bill King was replaced by a great player, Richard Kermode:

JANIS JOPLIN BAND #?

Marcus Doubleday is replaced by Terry Hensley before February 1969:

This was another lineup in March 1969, with bassist Keith Cherry on temporary basis:

In April 1969, Brad Campbell is back, and they add another sax player, Cornelius 'Snooky' Flowers:

Brad Campbell

Richard Kermode

Terry Hensley

Terry Clements

Snooky Flowers

But soon after, Roy left the band (being replaced by Lonnie Castille) before they recorded any album. But some tracks have been appearing in posthumous albums, as we can read below.

By the way, I have an album called Janis, from the soundtracks of the motion picture of the same name. There are 3 tracks recorded live with The Kozmic Blues Band, from a concert at a military base in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1969, and filmed by a crew for Munich TV. The audio was not too good so producer Elliot Mazer hired Roy prior to the album release to overdub his drum parts.

THE CATSKILLS

He rejoined The Catskills for a while with Eddie Ashman, but I don't know about the lineups. Any help would be appreciated.

AND THEN...

He also started playing in sessions before joining Petula Clark for many years.

PETULA CLARK BAND

Roy Markowitz joined Petula Clark´s road band playing Europe, Iran and the US, mostly Las Vegas and Tahoe in 1971-87. He recorded two albums with her. The first was Come On Home on RCA, then Live at Albert Hall. During that time the guitarists were Hugh McCracken, Teddy Irwin, and Bob Mann. The conductors or music directors were Frank Owens and Harold Wheeler.

These were the musicians backing Petula Clark around 1973:

PETULA CLARK BAND #?
?
Petula Clark
vocals
Teddy Irwin
guitar
Kirk Hamilton
bass
Frank Owens
keyboards

PETER ALLEN BAND

Roy has also played with Peter Allen, but can´t find info about when or the names of other musicians, except for John Trivers on bass. They supported Bette Midler´s first West Coast gig at the Troubadour in LA. Help with additional info, please...

AND THEN...

And then, I haven't been able to find more bands with Roy. But he has been playing in many albums, as we can read in the discography.

As a New York session musician, Roy also played on Broadway in Grease and for Twyla Tharp´s dance company at the Winterland on Broadway.

He played with Gerry Mulligan at a memorial service for Jim Buffington and recorded with Zoot Sims for The Manhattan Transfer.

His jingle work includes possibly the longest running commercial in any media the ´San Pelligrino´ Theme written by Jeff Hest.

Some years ago, Roy was producing an artist at his own facility in NY,and also was an adjunct Professor at Queensborough Community College.

DISCOGRAPHY: (53 albums known to me - Status: Quite advanced)

ALBUMS AS A BAND MEMBER (3 credits)
  • Live at The Royal Albert Hall - Petula Clark (1972)

  • Come on home - Petula Clark (1974)

  • Farewell song - Janis Joplin (1983)

    • Members: Peter Albin, Sam Andrew, Brad Campbell, Terry Clements, Snooky Flowers, Luis Gasca, Dave Getz, Roy Markowitz, Ken Pearson, Clark Pierson, John Till (RIP: Richard Bell, James Gurley, Janis Joplin, Richard Kermode)
    • Guests: Denny Seiwell, Chrissie Stewart, Peter Stroud, Mick Weaver
    • Producer: Todd Rundgren
    • Technical: Vic Anesini, Bob Irwin
    • Comments: This posthumous album by the great Janis contains unreleased live and studio tracks with her three bands: the magnificent Big Brother & The Holding Company (6 tracks), plus Full Tilt Boogie Band (1 track) and Kozmic Blues Band (1 track), and one more track was recorded with Paul Butterfield Blues Band. But the albums states: "Additional musicians: Denny Seiwell, Chrissy Stewart, Mick Weaver, Elliot Mazer, Roy Markowitz, Peter Stroud, Vinny De La Rocca". That's because some songs were re-worked many years later, with studio musicians. By the way, the album contains a very lovely dedication to Janis from her old friend Country Joe McDonald.

    2. Yes. Roy was the original drummer with Orleans and suggested that (his favorite drummer; Wells Kelley) join the band to split piano/drum/vocal chores.
That Band played a live gig in Philadelphia and several others in Woodstock, NY.
