My intention is to tell what I know about them, hoping that those people who like them too, will help me fill numerous gaps, which I may have in their careers and discographies. BIOGRAPHY:

Great sax player (also playing flute), he was born in Rochester on April 6th, 1943. When he was at high school, he started playing with Chuck Mangione. Since then, he has been playing with Chuck and brother Gap Mangione many times along the years.

After more than six years with Chuck Mangione since 1968, he left the band in 1976, starting his own quartet, called Timepiece.

He was also a member of Gil Evans Orchestra, Gerry Mulligan Group (circa 1980), and Simon & Garfunkel backing band (in the Concert in Central Park DVD). He backed Liza Minnelli in 2007, and was the 1st saxophone of the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra.

He rejoined Chuck Mangione in 1994, and he was currently still playing with him.

He was also father to sax player Adam Niewood.

He unexpectedly died in the plane crash that happened in Buffalo on February 12, 2009. He was travelling along with bandmate, guitarist Coleman Mellett, who were to play with Chuck Mangione and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.
