BIOGRAPHY:

Amazing and gifted guitarist, Gary Moore has always been a favourite of mine since I first heard him. I´ve followed all his career, and, although he has played many different styles, from hard rock to blues, also fusion, I find him always enjoyable.

Last night, I felt shocked when I read the news about his unexpected passing while he was on vacation here in Spain. I hadn´t thought of writing my page about him for now, as he has some very good websites devoted to him, but now I feel I have to pay my tribute.

I´ll be completing the info soon, along the next days. For now, I must tell that I attended one concert by Gary. It was in 1987, in Madrid. I travelled by bus to see the concert. The roster included British band Shy, Spanish idols Baron Rojo, and finally, Gary Moore headlining. His band comprised Neil Carter on keyboards and great vocals, Bob Daisley on bass and Eric Singer on drums. It was a magnificent performance, with a lengthy rendition of ´The loner´. I enjoyed it a lot. After finishing, I went back to the bus, back to my city, where I arrived early in the morning on time to go to my job. I didn´t sleep a minute along the trip, I was too excited due to what I had seen and heard. I was exhausted but very happy.

So, please, remember that this biography is still unfinished, especially regarding band lineups after 1985... I´m working on it too.

Gary Moore was born on April 4th, 1952 in Belfast, Ireland.

THE METHOD

The Method was a trio from Belfast. When their guitarist (Dave Lewis) had an accident, they asked a very young Gary Moore to join for some gigs:

SPINNING WHEEL

Around 1969, this was the lineup of this that already contained musicians that were to become very famous:

SPINNING WHEEL #?
1969-1970
Mike Starrs
vocals
Gary Moore
guitar
Pete Sills
bass
Rick Wakeman
keyboards

Rick Wakeman was replaced by John Stevenson in 1970.

In 1970, John Stevenson joins Spinning Wheel:

I don´t know how much they stayed together. Help with info, please!

êThe Method
Phil Lynott

Gary Moore
guitar
Brush Shiels

The band was based in Dublin.

Lynott left them in June 1969.

Now Skid Row is a power trio:

GARY MOORE BAND

In 1972, Gary Moore forms his own Gary Moore Band:

In 1973, the Gary Moore Band changes their bassist:

THIN LIZZY

In January 1974, Phil Lynott calls his former mate Gary Moore to join Thin Lizzy to replace original guitarist Eric Bell who was suffering from health exhaustion.

THIN LIZZY #2
Jan 74-Apr 74
Gary Moore
guitar
Phil Lynott

But, after some months, the band announced that Gary Bell wouldn´t come back, so Gary stayed as a permanent member... but not for long as he leaves in April 1974.

THE SOUL SEARCHERS

This was a studio band, assembled by Jack Lancaster, Robin Lumley and some famous friends. Part of the lineup was:

THE SOUL SEARCHERS #1
?
John Goodsall
guitar
Gary Moore
guitar
Jack Lancaster
wind
Percy Jones
bass
Robin Lumley

COLOSSEUM II

In January 1975, Jon Hiseman started looking for people to form his new venture, Colosseum II (a sort of continuation of Colosseum under a different perspective. No sax, but still jazz-rock oriented). The guitarist in the band was Gary Moore, so he brought Graham Bell for the auditions. But he finally didn't join (Mike Starrs was the chosen singer). Although there were some different tentative initial lineups, the first official lineup is formed in May 1975:

COLOSSEUM II #1
May 75-Aug 76
Mike Starrs
vocals
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Neil Murray
bass
Don Airey
keyboards
Jon Hiseman
drums

After one album, Strange new flesh, in the summer of 1976, Starrs and Murray are fired at the suggestion of Bronze Records, who then dropped the band anyway.

In September 1976, they get a new bassist, John Mole, but they don't get a new singer, as Gary Moore will sing lead from now on:

COLOSSEUM II #1
Sep 76-Aug 78
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
John Mole
bass
Don Airey
keyboards
Jon Hiseman
drums
Thin Lizzyê

They released two more albums along 1977: Electric savage and War dance. Superb albums, very intrincated. All the players are fantastic there, but I specially love the duels between Airey and Moore.

Electric savage was recorded in the winter of 76, after a week of live rehearsals. Don writes the tracks ´Am I´ and ´Intergalactic strut´. My favourite tracks are ´Put it this way´, ´Desperado´ and the superb ´Am I´.

In War dance, Don writes the tracks ´War dance´ and part of the suite ´Star maiden´.

In August 1978, Gary Moore leaves to join Thin Lizzy again.

To be covered (6): Don Airey, Keith Airey, Jon Hiseman, John Mole, Neil Murray, Mike Starrs

THE GREEDY BASTARDS

In January 1977, Larry Wallis played in a one-off gig with members of Thin Lizzy:

THE GREEDY BASTARDS #?
Jan 77
Phil Lynott
vocals, bass
Gary Moore
guitar
Scott Gorham
guitar
Brian Robertson
guitar
Larry Wallis
guitar, vocals
Rat Scabies
drums

A killer lineup!!

THIN LIZZY (again)

In January 1977, Phil Lynott calls again Gary Moore to join Thin Lizzy to replace Brian Robertson who had his hand injured and couldn´t attend their forthcoming tour:

THIN LIZZY #?
Jan 77-Mar 77
Scott Gorham
guitar
Gary Moore
guitar
Phil Lynott
bass, vocals
Brian Downey
drums

But Robertson announces in March 1977 that he won´t rejoin Thin Lizzy, so Moore is asked to stay, which he doesn´t. Instead, Robertson comes back. A bit crazy.

THE GREEDY BASTARDS (again)

This was a fun band, usually comprising members of the band Thin Lizzy. This was the lineup announced for a February 1978 gig:

THE GREEDY BASTARDS #?
Feb 78
Phil Lynott
vocals, bass
Gary Holton
vocals
Gary Moore
guitar
Rat Scabies
drums

As we can see, it also included members of Heavy Metal Kids, The Damned. Finally, the gig was cancelled.

A different lineup in July 1978 was:

THE GREEDY BASTARDS #?
Jul 78
Phil Lynott
vocals, bass
Gary Moore
guitar
Scott Gorham
guitar
Chris Spedding
guitar
Steve Jones
guitar
Paul Cook
drums
Brian Downey
drums

This time, with members of Thin Lizzy and Sex Pistols.

To be covered (7): Brian Downey, Scott Gorham, Gary Holton, Phil Lynott, Brian Robertson, Chris Spedding, Larry Wallis

THIN LIZZY (again)

In July 1978, Gary Moore joins Thin Lizzy for the third time (again, to replace the departing Brian Robertson):

THIN LIZZY #?
Jul 78-Aug 78
Scott Gorham
guitar
Gary Moore
guitar
Phil Lynott
bass, vocals
Brian Downey
drums

But in August 1978, Brian Downey has to leave the band for a while, not being able to play in their next tour.

In August 1978, Mark Nauseef temporarily replaces drummer Brian Downey for their next tours:

THIN LIZZY #?
Aug 78-Oct 78
Scott Gorham
guitar
Gary Moore
guitar
Phil Lynott
bass, vocals
Mark Nauseef
drums

When the last tour finishes in October 1978, Downey comes back.

In November 1978, Brian Downey is back in Thin Lizzy on drums:

THIN LIZZY #?
Nov 78-Jul 79
Scott Gorham
guitar
Gary Moore
guitar
Phil Lynott
bass, vocals
Brian Downey
drums

In July 1979, Gary Moore leaves.

Other info on members of Thin Lizzy (I know up to 22 members)
To be covered (21): Tommy Aldridge, Eric Bell, Vivian Campbell, Francesco DiCosmo, Brian Downey, John DuCann, Dave Flett, Andy Gee, Scott Gorham, Randy Gregg, Michael Lee, Phil Lynott, Marco Mendoza, Mark Nauseef, Guy Pratt, Brian Robertson, John Sykes, Midge Ure, Ricky Warwick, Darren Wharton, Snowy White

GARY MOORE BAND (again)

A few months after Don has joined Rainbow, Gary Moore called him to play on a TV appearance at the Old Grey Whistle Test program on January 1979, promoting Gary's album Back on the streets, where Don played. This was the very interesting lineup, billed as Gary Moore & Friends:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Jan 79
Gary Moore
vocals, guitar
Scott Gorham
guitar
Phil Lynott
bass, vocals
Don Airey
keyboards
Cozy Powell
drums

They played at least two songs, ´Back on the streets´ and ´Don't believe a word´. Oh, who may have a copy of that? :) :)

G-FORCE

This was next venture by Gary Moore, a band called G-Force, formed at the beginning of 1980:

G-FORCE #1
1980-Jul 80
Willie Dee
vocals
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Tony Newton
bass
Mark Nauseef
drums

But the band´s life was very short, and they parted ways in July 1980.

AND THEN...

When Cozy Powell leaves Rainbow in August 1980, he starts conversations with Gary Moore about forming a joint band, but contractual problems between managements forced them to abandon the idea (although several years later, it came reality).

GARY MOORE BAND (again)

Gary and Don together again... In November 1980, Gary Moore assembles a band to play four gigs. Three of them were at The Marquee in London.

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Nov 80
Kenny Driscoll
vocals
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Andy Pyle
bass
Don Airey
keyboards
Tommy Aldridge
drums

There's a live album from those concerts. It's called Live (at the Marquee), and it was recorded on November 5/6, 1980.

GREG LAKE BAND

After the (first) split of Emerson, Lake & Palmer in 1979, Greg Lake called Gary Moore to help him to assemble a powerful live band, what Gary did in what a way! This was June 1981:

GREG LAKE BAND #1
Jun 81-Apr 82
Greg Lake
vocals, guitar
Gary Moore
guitar
Tristam Margetts
bass
Tommy Eyre
keyboards
Ted McKenna
drums
Michael Schenker Groupê

They released a first album, Greg Lake, although it includes many sessionmen also there. One of my favourite ever songs is the beautiful ´It hurts´, but it also has some killer tracks, such as ´Nuclear attack´. Tommy co-writes a song called ´The lie´. Guests: Steve Lukather, Dean Parks, Snuffy Walden (guitar), Bill Cuomo, Greg Mathieson (keyboards), David Hungate (bass), the late Jeff Porcaro, Jody Leigh, Michael Giles (drums), Clarence Clemmons (sax).

They played at Reading Festival in August 1981, where the band amazed the audience, especially due to Gary Moore´s playing. Fortunately, after years of looking for some recording of their performances, we are able to hear them, thanks to a King Biscuit release, Greg Lake in concert. The two King Crimson songs that they played show Gary Moore at his best. It was recorded on November 5th, 1981. There's also a limited special edition with one bonus track, ´C'est la vie´.

The last concerts by the band were played in December 1981. They started a second album, Manoeuvres, recorded with the same band, although I guess there must be session musicians too. It was recorded in February 1982, and released next year. It's uncertain if Tommy is featured there.

The band dispersed in April 1982, when Ted McKenna joined Michael Schenker Group.

Greg Lake has released a 2CD compilation called Greg Lake: from the beginning, featuring tracks by King Crimson, Emerson Lake & Palmer, from Pete Sinfield solo album, Greg Lake own solo albums, and Emerson Lake & Powell (with Cozy Powell). Tommy Eyre is featured in some of the Greg Lake solo tracks (no unreleased material featuring Tommy). Other great musicians appearing here: from King Crimson (Robert Fripp, Mike Giles, Ian McDonald, Mel Collins, Pete Giles and guest Keith Tippett), from ELP (Keith Emerson, Carl Palmer, Cozy Powell), and from Lake's solo material (Geoff Downes, Mike Giles again).

Greg Lake started selling an album directly from his official website. It's called From the underground: the official bootleg. It contains unreleased material (studio and live). It contains tracks with The Shame (1967), Shy Limbs (1968), King Crimson (1969), Greg Lake solo (1973), Greg Lake Band (1981), Asia (1983), Emerson Lake & Powell (1986, with Cozy Powell), Greg Lake solo (1986), Emerson Lake & Palmer (1992 & 1993), Greg Lake Band (1994). Regarding Tommy Eyre, he appears in the two tracks with Greg Lake Band (´Retribution drive´ and ´21st century schizoid man´), both recorded live in 1981 at The Palladium, New York City.

After 20 years, both studio albums, Greg Lake and Manoeuvres were released on CD in the year 2000.

GARY MOORE BAND (again)

Around May 1982, Gary Moore leads his own band, keeping Tommy Eyre with him. They play in Corridors of power. A fantastic album, from start to finish. With a superb lineup: Gary Moore (vocals, guitar), Neil Murray (bass), Tommy Eyre (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums), plus help from Jack Bruce (vocals in 1 song), the late Bobby Chouinard (drums, 1 song), Mo Foster (bass, 1 song). It's hard to me choosing some favourites here; maybe ´End of the world´, ´I can't wait until tomorrow´ and the rendition of Free's ´Wishing well´. Love it!!

This was the live band lineup:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
May 82-Sep 82
êGreg Lake Band
êGreg Lake Band
Charlie Huhn
vocals
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Neil Murray
bass
Tommy Eyre
keyboards
Ian Paice
drums

But soon after last concert at Reading Festival in August 1982, Tommy leaves (being replaced by another great player, Don Airey).

In September 1982, Don rejoins Gary Moore Band:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Sep 82-Feb 83
John Sloman
vocals, keyboards
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Neil Murray
bass
Don Airey
keyboards
Ian Paice
drums

They release the great live album Rockin' every night - live in Japan. Initially to be released only in that country, fortunately it was later released all over the world. I love this album, and the dedication of the song ´Sunset´ from Don Airey to the great, late Randy Rhoads is very emotive.

But for the next studio album, Sloman leaves the band in February 1983.

This is the Gary Moore Band in February 1983:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Feb 83-May 83
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Neil Murray
bass
Don Airey
keyboards
Ian Paice
drums
Ozzy Osbourne Bandê

They keep on with the tour as a quartet, but in May 1983, Don leaves to join Ozzy again, being replaced by Neil Carter.

New band member in Gary Moore Band is the talented Neil Carter:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
May 83-Oct 83
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Neil Murray
bass
Neil Carter
keyboards, vocals, guitar
Ian Paice
drums

By the time of recording next album, Victims of the future, Neil was to leave the band, thus playing only in the song ´Shapes of things´ (the other tracks are played by Mo Foster and Bob Daisley). The album was recorded in October-November 1983.

In January 1984, Craig Gruber joins Gary Moore Band:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Jan 84-Mar 84
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Craig Gruber
bass
Neil Carter
keyboards, vocals, guitar
Ian Paice
drums
Deep Purpleê

And in April 1984, Ian Paice left to rejoin Deep Purple.

The new drummer in Gary Moore Band in May 1984 is the mighty Bobby Chouinard:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
May 84-Jul 84
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Craig Gruber
bass
Neil Carter
keyboards, vocals, guitar
Bobby Chouinard
drums

Next change happens in July 1984, when Gruber leaves.

In August 1984, Bob Daisley starts playing in Gary Moore Band for a few gigs and festivals:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Aug 84-Sep 84
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Bob Daisley
bass
Neil Carter
keyboards, vocals, guitar
Bobby Chouinard
drums

In December 1984, Gary Moore plays a few gig, including his mate Phil Lynott as guest:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Dec 84
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Bob Daisley
bass
Neil Carter
keyboards, vocals, guitar
Paul Thompson
drums
+
Phil Lynott
vocals, bass

In September 1985, this is the new Gary Moore Band for touring during 1985 and part of 1986:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Sep 85-1986
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Bob Daisley
bass
Neil Carter
keyboards, vocals, guitar
Gary Ferguson
drums

In March 1987, Gary Moore starts a new edition of his band for a lengthy tour until September:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Mar 87-Sep 87
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Bob Daisley
bass
Neil Carter
keyboards, vocals, guitar
Eric Singer
drums

This was the band I saw live in Madrid on May 10th, 1987. A great night.

Cozy Powell played in Gary Moore´s album After the war, only as a guest (along with Chris Thompson, Sam Brown, Miriam Stockley, Neil Carter, Laurence Cottle, Bob Daisley, Charlie Morgan, Don Airey, Simon Phillips as well as Ozzy Osbourne),

I don't know exactly when Cozy joined the band. When Gary's next album, After the war, was recorded, there wasn't a stable lineup, but the credits show the next lineup, who was to promote it (also appearing in the videos, such as the ´After the war´ song video):

GARY MOORE BAND #?
?
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Bob Daisley
bass
Neil Carter
keyboards, guitar, vocals
Cozy Powell
drums
Black Sabbathê

Other musicians in the album: Laurence Cottle (bass), Steve Piggott (bass), Don Airey (keyboards), Andy Richards (keyboards), Charlie Morgan (drums), Simon Phillips (drums), guest vocals by Ozzy Osbourne (on two tracks), and backing vocals by: Chris Thompson, Sam Brown, Miriam Stockley, Andrew Eldritch.

But Gary and Cozy personalities weren't easy to complement, and Cozy leaves the band after some problems between them, being substituted by another ex-Uriah Heep member, Chris Slade.

In March 1989, Gary Moore starts a new tour until May, now with the wonderful Chris Slade on the drum seat:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Mar 89-May 89
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Bob Daisley
bass
Neil Carter
keyboards, vocals, guitar
Chris Slade
drums

In April 1990, Don is again playing with Gary Moore, touring to promote the fantastic album Still got the blues, where Don also appeared:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Apr 90-Sep 90
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Andy Pyle
bass
Don Airey
keyboards
Frank Mead
sax
Nick Payn
sax
Nick Pentelow
sax
Martin Drover
trumpet
Graham Walker
drums

For some concerts, they were joined by the late Albert Collins, who appeared as a guest in Gary´s blues albums.
The tour finished in September 1990.

Next Gary Moore album was called After hours. The album doesn't have a definite lineup (3 bassists, 2 drummers), but Tommy Eyre is the only keyboardist in the album. Other musicians: Will Lee (bass), Bob Daisley (bass), John B. Gaydon (bass), Graham Walker (drums), Anton Fig (drums), a big horn section: Martin Drover, Frank Mead, Nick Pentelow, Nick Payn and The Memphis Horns (Andrew Lowe and Wayne Jackson). With two very special guests: B.B. King and Albert Collins. A very fine album. My favourite tracks are the fantastic ´Story of the blues´, plus ´Key to love´, ´Jumpin' at shadows´ and the lovely ballad ´Nothing´s the same´.

The album includes some musicians from my Olympus in the thanks section, so maybe they played in the demos and rehearsals: Andy Pyle, Mo Foster, Kuma Harada, and Charlie Morgan.

There´s a song not present in the album, but available on a limited CD-single of ´Since I met you baby´. The song is ´Once in a blue mood´, featuring Gary Moore (guitar), Albert Collins (guitar), Will Lee (bass), Tommy Eyre (keyboards), Anton Fig (drums).

After his change into blues, Gary started calling his live band as Gary Moore and The Midnight Blues Band. It's almost the lineup of After hours, with Andy Pyle back into the band. This was March 1992:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Mar 92-?
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Andy Pyle
bass
Tommy Eyre
keyboards
Frank Mead
sax, harmonica
Nick Payn
sax
Nick Pentelow
sax
Martin Drover
trumpet
Graham Walker
drums
Candy McKenzie
backing vocals
Carol Thompson
backing vocals

This lineup released a live album, Blues alive, recorded in 1992. Includes a guest appearance from Albert Collins in one song. All the material is blues, except a beautiful rendition of Gary's own ´Parisienne walkways´. Listen to Tommy's solo on ´Further on up the road´, and how he replies there to Gary's guitar. Great!!

In July 1993, there's a new tour with a smaller lineup (no horn section or backing vocalists):

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Jul 93
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Andy Pyle
bass
Tommy Eyre
keyboards
Graham Walker
drums
Jack Bruce Bandê

They played two concerts (one of them in Spain), that same month. After the Spanish gig, the whole tour was cancelled, and Gary Moore went to play for some one-off gigs with Jack Bruce.

JACK BRUCE BAND

In November 1993, Jack Bruce celebrated his 50th anniversary with 2 concerts for German TV, where he reunited with many of his past bandmates and friends. This is the list:

JACK BRUCE BAND #?
Nov 93
Jack Bruce
vocals, bass, piano
Maggie Reilly

Pete Brown
vocals, percussion
Gary ´Mudbone´ Cooper
vocals, percussion
Kip Hanrahan
vocals

Francois Garny
bass
Bernie Worrell
keyboards
Art Themen
sax
Henry Lowther
trumpet
John Mumford

Ginger Baker
drums
Simon Phillips

Gary Husband

Cities of the heart is a superb double live album, recorded in Cologne, November 2/3 1993, in that celebration. It features an all-star lineup. Includes live renditions of some of his classics: ´Sunshine of your love´, ´Politician´, ´Theme for an imaginary western´, ´Born under a bad sign´, etc. There's also an abridged edition, Sitting on top of the world (1CD, with a selection of tracks).

BBM

This supergroup was formed by:

BBM #1
?-May 94
êJack Bruce Band
êJack Bruce Band
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Jack Bruce
bass, vocals
Ginger Baker
drums

The idea behind this agrupation was clear. They wanted to recreate a powerful blues trio, just in the style of Cream.

They released a very fine album, Around the next dream. Yes, it´s like Cream. That's what you find there, plus some pleasant surprises, such as the jazzy beautiful ballad ´Wrong side of town´, sung by the delicious voice of Jack Bruce. The keyboards in the album were all played by Tommy Eyre. You can hear clearly his superb organ playing, for example, in the song ´High cost of loving´ or ´I wonder why´.

The album was followed by a tour (they played 3 concerts in Spain!), and they got Tommy as a keyboardist there.

After that tour (May to July 1994), everybody came back to their solo careers, and Tommy went on with Gary again.

GARY MOORE BAND (again)

In April 1995, Gary Moore resurrects his Midnight Blues Band, with his friends:

GARY MOORE BAND #?
Apr 95-Jul 95
Gary Moore
guitar, vocals
Andy Pyle
bass
Tommy Eyre
keyboards
Nick Payn
sax
Nick Pentelow
sax
Graham Walker
drums

Gary's next album is a full tribute to Peter Green, including Peter Green´s original songs as well as a version that Peter played with Fleetwood Mac, the beautiful ´Need your love so bad´. Its title is Blues for Greeny.

There was also released a live video from the subsequent tour. Called Blues for Greeny live (1996, Warner), it was recorded on April 27, 1995. After playing at Montreux Festival in July 1995, they cancel all the other gigs.

Gary Moore's next step was another great change. He leaves the blues direction, turning into a more poppy style, and Tommy doesn't stay in his band.

There are several Gary Moore compilations, and it's easy that Tommy will be featured there. He appears in Ballads and blues 1982-1994. This compilation features 3 unreleased tracks, as well as some alternate takes. The horrible news arrived when it was reported that Gary Moore had passed away on February 6th, 2011, while spending some vacation in Estepona, at the south of Spain. He was 58.

Thanks, Gary, for so much enjoyment. You´ll be in my heart forever.

DISCOGRAPHY: (82 albums known to me - Status: In progress)

OWN ALBUMS (19 credits)
  • Grinding stone - Gary Moore Band (1973)

    • Members: Frank Boylan, John Curtis, Philip Donnelly, Pearce Kelly, Jan Schelhaas (RIP: Gary Moore)
    • Producer: Martin Birch
  • Back on the streets - Gary Moore (1978)

    • Members: Don Airey, Brian Downey (RIP: Phil Lynott, Gary Moore)
    • Guests: Simon Phillips (RIP: John Mole)
    • Producer: Chris Tsangarides
    • Comments: Back on the streets was Gary's 2nd solo album, recorded while he still was in Thin Lizzy. Recorded with Gary's companions in Thin Lizzy: Phil Lynott (bass, vocals) and Brian Downey (drums), plus John Mole (bass), Don Airey (keyboards), Simon Phillips (drums). The album has two different parts: some songs are near to hard rock style (a la Thin Lizzy), and some songs are pure jazz-rock (a la Colosseum). It includes the original version of ´Parisienne walkways´, as well as great songs such as ´Back on the streets´, or a slow rendition of Lizzy´s classic ´Don´t believe a word´.
  • Corridors of power - Gary Moore (1982)

    • Members: Neil Murray, Ian Paice (RIP: Bobby Chouinard, Tommy Eyre, Gary Moore)
    • Guests: Jack Bruce, Mo Foster
    • Technical: Ian Cooper
  • Rockin´ every night - Live in Japan - Gary Moore (1983)

    • Members: Don Airey, Tommy Aldridge, Charlie Huhn, Andy Pyle (RIP: Gary Moore)
    • Guests: Jimmy Bain
    • Producer: Chris Tsangarides
    • Comments: This album wasn't released as an official album, but several years later, it finally appeared. The musicians in the album are: Charlie Huhn (vocals), Andy Pyle (bass), Jimmy Bain (bass), Don Airey (keyboards), and Tommy Aldridge (drums). The album was recorded in the beginning of 1981.
  • Run for cover - Gary Moore (1985)

    • Members: Don Airey, Neil Carter, Bob Daisley, Gary Ferguson, Glenn Hughes, Paul Thompson (RIP: Phil Lynott, Gary Moore)
    • Guests: Charlie Morgan, Andy Richards
    • Producer: Andy Johns (RIP: Mike Stone)
    • Comments: Run for cover is a good album, containing several superb songs, such as ´Military man´ (sung by the great Phil Lynott). At that time, Gary's band was Glenn Hughes (bass, vocals), Neil Carter (keyboards), and Gary Ferguson, but they used lots of different musicians along the whole album: Don Airey (keyboards), Andy Richards (keyboards), Charlie Morgan (drums), Paul Thompson (drums), Bob Daisley (bass). Produced by Mike Stone. Don plays in two tracks: ´Military man´ and ´Out in the fields´.
  • After the war - Gary Moore (1989)

    • Guests: Sam Brown, Laurence Cottle, Charlie Morgan, Ozzy Osbourne, Simon Phillips, Stephen Piggott, Andy Richards, Miriam Stockley, Chris Thompson
    • Comments: Don also played in the album After the war, only as a guest. Other musicians in the album: Laurence Cottle (bass), Steve Piggott (bass), Don Airey (keyboards), Andy Richards (keyboards), Charlie Morgan (drums), Simon Phillips (drums), guest vocals by Ozzy Osbourne (on two tracks), and backing vocals by: Chris Thompson, Sam Brown, Miriam Stockley, Andrew Eldritch.

    • Guests: Stuart Brooks, Raul D´Oliveira, Andy Hamilton (RIP: Albert Collins, Nicky Hopkins, Albert King)
    • Comments: Still got the blues is a superb album!!! I love it! Gary Moore is one of my favourite artists, and I've always loved this kind of blues, so two reasons for loving it. The list of musicians is fantastic. George Harrison (guitar & backing vocals in 1 track written by him), Andy Pyle (bass, 9 tracks), Bob Daisley (bass, 3 tracks), Mick Weaver (keyboards, 5 tracks), Don Airey (keyboards, 6 tracks), Nicky Hopkins (keyboards, 2 tracks), Graham Walker (drums), Brian Downey (drums, old Gary Moore colleague in Thin Lizzy) plus the horn section: Frank Mead (sax, harmonica), Nick Pentelow (sax), Nick Payn (sax), Raoul D´Oliveira (trumpet). The album is dedicated to Peter Green. I love all the songs here, but if I had to choose some, my favourite songs are ´Oh pretty woman´ (just incredible), ´Still got the blues´, ´King of the blues´ (with those great horns blowing and blowing), ´As the years go passing by´ (a lovely rendition of this old song).

ALBUMS AS A BAND MEMBER (19 credits)

    • Members: Brian Downey, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson (RIP: Phil Lynott, Gary Moore)
    • Guests: Jimmy Horowitz, Frankie Miller, Jean Roussel

It also features old member Gary Moore (guitar), plus great guests: Frankie Miller (vocals), Jean Roussel (keyboards), Jimmy Horowitz (strings). The album was produced by Ron Nevison. • Members: Don Airey, Jack Bruce, Clem Clempson, Bernie Marsden, Max Middleton (RIP: Gary Moore, Cozy Powell)
    • Producer: Martin Birch
    • Technical: Ian Cooper, Alan Douglas
    • Comments: Over the top is a killer album. The thanks section mentions Roger Glover and Neil Murray. All the songs are instrumentals, but they funnily write: 'lyrics enclosed'.
    • My opinion: All the tracks are fantastic, as well as musicianship. You can hear Jack Bruce at his best, Clem Clempson is making his guitar howl, and Gary Moore´s speed is incredible. Don Airey arranges all the songs, as well as writing the great 'Killer', and co-writing 'Heidi goes to town' and 'Over the top'. I love when he plays the 'White room' riff inside 'Theme One'. Jack Bruce sure was smiling...
Clem plays fantastically in two tracks, 'Sweet poison' and 'The loner'.
  • Black rose - Thin Lizzy (02/1979)

    • Members: Brian Downey, Scott Gorham (RIP: Phil Lynott, Gary Moore)
    • Guests: Jimmy Bain, Huey Lewis
    • Comments: A great band, commanded by the much-missed Phil Lynott. The lineup for this album was: Phil Lynott (vocals, bass) / Scott Gorham (guitar) / Gary Moore (guitar) / Brian Downey (drums). But they got some friends to play with them: Jimmy Bain (bass), Huey Lewis (harmonica). The thanks credits mention Mark Nauseef (drums), as he played with the band substituting Brian Downey for a short tour.

    • Members: Frank Aiello, Don Airey, Jack Bruce, Bernie Marsden, Neil Murray (RIP: Gary Moore, Cozy Powell)
    • Guests: Jeff Beck, Mel Collins, John Cook, Elmer Gantry, Chris Glen, Kirby Gregory, David Sancious
    • Comments: Tilt was recorded during Spring 1981, with lots of former bandmates. The complete personnel list is: Cozy Powell + Elmer Gantry (vocals, from Stretch) Frank Aiello (vocals) Jeff Beck (guitar) Gary Moore (guitar) Bernie Marsden (guitar) Kirby (guitars, from Stretch) Jack Bruce (bass) David Sancious (keyboards, from Jack Bruce Band) Don Airey (keyboards) John Cook (keyboards, from Stretch) Chris Glen (bass) Neil Murray (bass) Mel Collins (sax)
    • My opinion: I love this album. It contains the song who started my love for Gary Moore, ´Sunset´. A very beautiful and slow instrumental, it's magical! I also enjoy a lot the song ´The blister´, with a terrific rhythm by Cozy, Don Airey and Gary Moore. Don plays just in those two tracks, ´Sunset´ and ´The blister´.

  • Octopuss - Cozy Powell (1983)

    • Members: Don Airey (RIP: Gary Moore, Cozy Powell)

The lineup is: Gary Moore and Mel Galley (guitars), Colin Hodgkinson (bass), Jon Lord and Don Airey (keyboards), and Cozy Powell (drums). Plus John Du Prez and the Philharmonia. Who needs more? Perry (bass, vocals) Robin Lumley (keyboards) Rick Van Der Linden (keyboards) Rod Argent (keyboards) Clive Bunker (drums) A superb album, it includes one of my favourite songs ever, 'Save a place for me', with haunting vocals by Bernie Frost. NOTE: this album has been reissued in several shapes (my guess, without any kind of permission or legal rights) under different names (Deep Green), and the most surprising is that the reissues are not credited to Jack Lancaster!! For example, I have an edition called Wild connections. The album is not credited to anyone, but the cover show the names of Phil Collins, Gary Moore and Rod Argent. To make things worse, we must remember that there is an official album called Wild Connections (recorded with Rick Van Der Linden, see above), and they're completely different records!!!
