Following that, John McVie leaves the band in August 1967 to rejoin old Mayall bandmates Peter Green and Mick Fleetwood in order to form the fantastic blues-rock band Fleetwood Mac. Rip Kant also leaves, and the new lineup in August 1967 is:

JOHN MAYALL BAND #?

Mick Taylor

Keef Hartley
drums

They recorded a track in September 1967, 'Suspicions (part one)' included in the fantastic collection of outtakes, Thru the years, and 'Suspicions (part 2)' appears in another collection of outtakes, Looking back.

Paul Williams only stayed two months, until October 1967. The bassist role was filled in a very short period with three different musicians.

BLUE WHALE

Blue Whale was a new band formed by Aynsley Dunbar in January 1970, only keeping Tommy Eyre from his former band (Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation):

BLUE WHALE #1
Jan 70
êBogomas
êAynsley Dunbar Retaliation
Paul Williams

Roger Sutton
bass
Tommy Eyre
keyboards
Pat Hicks
trumpet
Norman Leppard
sax
êAynsley Dunbar Retaliation
Edward Reay-Smith
trombone
Aynsley Dunbar
drums

Robert Fripp (cerebrum in King Crimson) almost joined the group. Tommy Eyre suggested Paul Williams for the vocalist role. They played a short tour in Scandinavia on January 1970, as well as playing in London that same month. But the horn section changed very soon.

In February 1970, the horn section in Blue Whale changed, and Roger Sutton changed bass for additional lead guitar:

Paul Williams

Roger Sutton

Peter Friedberg

Tommy Eyre

Charles Greetham

Edward Reay-Smith

Frank Zappa Bandê

This lineup released an album, Blue whale, in a progressive style, with long jamming songs. Produced and engineered by Aynsley Dunbar and Colin Caldwell. After many years, this album has been finally released on CD.

But Aynsley dissolved the band in February 1970, when he got a call from Frank Zappa to join forces. Coincidentally, the album contains a long version of Zappa's ´Willie the pimp´.

JUICY LUCY

After a few months, Ray Owen leaves the band, being substituted by Paul Williams.

JUICY LUCY #2
1969-?
Paul Williams
vocals
Glenn ´Ross´ Campbell
steel guitar
Neil Hubbard
guitar
Keith Ellis
bass
Chris Mercer
sax, piano
Pete Dobson
drums

Changes would continue in the band. Pete Dobson and the great Neil Hubbard also left them, and for a short period, he's replaced by Tommy Eyre (playing guitar, not keyboards!) and a fantastic drummer, Rod Coombes.

JUICY LUCY #3
? (probably around 1970)
Paul Williams
vocals
Glenn ´Ross´ Campbell
steel guitar
Tommy Eyre

Keith Ellis

But Eyre leaves soon, being replaced by another great musician, Micky Moody in August 1970.

JUICY LUCY #4
Aug 70 - ?
Paul Williams
vocals
Glenn ´Ross´ Campbell
steel guitar
Micky Moody
guitar
Keith Ellis
bass
Chris Mercer
sax, piano

In June 1970, this lineup recorded their second album, Lie back and enjoy it.

The band was chosen by Record Mirror magazine in their polls as ´most promising singer/band´ as #4 (ahead of, for example, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie and Black Sabbath!).

New changes again for their third album, Get a whiff of this:

JUICY LUCY #5
? - Jul 71
Paul Williams
vocals
Glenn ´Ross´ Campbell
steel guitar
Micky Moody
guitar
Jim Leverton
bass
Chris Mercer
sax, piano

In August 1971, Juicy Lucy appeared at festivals with new bassist Delisle Harper:

1971
Paul Williams
vocals
Glenn ´Ross´ Campbell
steel guitar
Micky Moody
guitar
DeLisle Harper
bass
Chris Mercer
sax, piano
Keef Hartley Bandê
Ro-Roê

And I guess that Chris Mercer left very soon afterwards, and most of the players left too. Campbell and Harper together tried to form another band.

The band, at this time, contained none of the original members, Pyle, Roussel and Berg join the band.

JUICY LUCY #6
Jul 71 - ?
êSavoy Brown
êLancaster´s Bombers
Paul Williams
vocals
Micky Moody
guitar
Andy Pyle
bass
Jean Roussel
keyboards
Ron Berg
drums

This lineup released their next album, Pieces (recorded in December 1971, and produced by Bruce Rowlands). The album included some guests: Ian McLagan (keyboards), Mick Weaver (keyboards), Albert Lee (backing vocals) and Chas Hodges (backing vocals).

Later, they were joined by Moody's friend, Bernie Marsden.

JUICY LUCY #7
?
êSkinny Cat
Paul Williams
vocals
Micky Moody
guitar
Bernie Marsden
guitar
Andy Pyle
bass
Jean Roussel

Ron Berg

UFOê

But Marsden´s stay in Juicy Lucy was really brief, being substituted by Dave Tedstone. This was the band around November 1971:

JUICY LUCY #8
?
Paul Williams
vocals
Micky Moody
guitar
Dave Tedstone
guitar
Andy Pyle
bass
Jean Roussel
keyboards
Ron Berg
drums
Cat Stevens Bandê

But Jean Roussel left after a few weeks, to join Cat Stevens live band.

For a while, Juicy Lucy stayed without keyboardist, after the departure of Jean Roussel:

JUICY LUCY #?
?
Paul Williams
vocals
Micky Moody
guitar
Dave Tedstone
guitar
Andy Pyle
bass
Ron Berg
drums

But they got Mike Deacon a little later.

Mike Deacon was the new keyboardist for Juicy Lucy:

JUICY LUCY #?
?
Paul Williams
vocals
Micky Moody
guitar
Dave Tedstone
guitar
Andy Pyle
bass
Mike Deacon
keyboards
Ron Berg
drums

Andy Pyle´s replacement was Chrissie Stewart:

JUICY LUCY #10
? - 1972
Paul Williams
vocals
Micky Moody
guitar
Dave Tedstone
guitar
Chrissie Stewart
bass
Mike Deacon
keyboards
Ron Berg
drums
Savoy Brownê

This was Juicy Lucy for the 1972 tour supporting Joe Cocker, with Terry Stannard as their new drummer:

JUICY LUCY #11
1972
Paul Williams
vocals
Micky Moody
guitar
Dave Tedstone
guitar
Chrissie Stewart
bass
Mike Deacon
keyboards
Terry Stannard
drums
Tempestê

There were some other lineups, with Frankie Miller as lead vocalist after Paul Williams left, and Bobby Harrison replacing Miller, before the band splitting in 1972, but I haven´t been able to find the complete details. Help, please! Also, Nick Judd was part of the band, but cannot place him in the timeline...

TEMPEST

Tempest was formed by Jon Hiseman after the first separation of Colosseum:

TEMPEST #1
Jun 72-1973
êJuicy Lucy

But after their first album, Allan Holdsworth said he wanted to leave the band.

In order to substitute Allan Holdsworth, Jon Hiseman contacts the great Ollie Halsall to join Tempest:

TEMPEST #2

Paul Williams

guitar, keyboards
Mark Clarke

Holdsworth was persuaded to remain some more in the band, now a quintet. But after a short time as a quintet, Williams left in June 1973.

  • Thru the years - John Mayall (1971)

    • Members: John Mayall + Aynsley Dunbar, Hughie Flint, Peter Green, Martin Hart, Henry Lowther, John McVie, Chris Mercer, Tony Reeves, Mick Taylor, Bernie Watson (RIP: Roger Dean, Keef Hartley, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Jon Hiseman, Paul Williams)
    • Producer: Mike Vernon
    • Technical: Bill Price, Derek Varnals (RIP: Gus Dudgeon)
    • Comments: Thru the years (originally a 2LP, including the complete Looking back LP inside), now it has been released as a 1CD, with just the tracks not yet included in Looking back. It comprises 14 tracks, none of them ever available on an album. Some musicians featured: Hughie Flint (2 tracks), Keef Hartley (1 track), Aynsley Dunbar (7 tracks), Chris Mercer (x tracks), Roger Dean. Noted appearances: Peter Green (8 songs, some of them just superb!), Mick Taylor (3 tracks), and several of the musicians who later formed Colosseum: Jon Hiseman, Tony Reeves and Dick Heckstall Smith.
    • My opinion: My opinion about those two rarities album is that they have a very good quality. I love them!!

    • Comments: In 1997, it has been released the compilation The best of John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers - As it all began 64-69. It has been digitally remastered, and includes Mayall's comments on every track, from an interview. In my own opinion, the selection is quite good, and includes some songs not available on albums. Keef Hartley plays in 5 tracks: ´Broken wings´ (from The blues alone), ´The death of J.B. Lenoir´ (from Crusade), ´Me and my woman´ (also from Crusade), ´Suspicions (part one)´ (from Thru the years), and ´Picture on the wall´ (from Looking back).
