BIOGRAPHY:
A legend in country-rock, he has played with almost everybody, not only drumming but also arranging. He mostly played sessions (his presence is very valuable on some of the most influential albums of all time) but he also had some time to belong to a few bands, such as Area Code 615, Barefoot Jerry, as well as playing in Bob Dylan Band and mostly dear to me, in Neil Young Band.
Kenny Buttrey (sometimes credited as Kenneth Buttrey) was born as Aaron Kenneth Buttrey on April 1st, 1945 in Nashville, Tennessee (USA). I still have to work in his bio, but I include the page and the discography as my tribute to Kenny.
His first band was backing country guitarist Chet Atkins. He also played in Charlie McCoy & The Escorts, backed Johnny Cash in his TV show during 1969 (where he backed Bob Dylan too), played with Area Code 615, later evolved into Barefoot Jerry, toured for a short time with Neil Young and then, dedicated almost full time to sessions.
He passed away due to cancer in September 12th, 2004 in Nashville, Tennessee (USA), where he spent playing most of his time. He was 59.
PAT CAMPBELL AND HER ESCORTS
The only info I have is that Kenny Buttrey and Wayne Moss were members of this band.
CHARLIE MCCOY AND THE ESCORTS
This band was formed by the great Charlie McCoy in the 60s:
Don´t know how much time they were active, or if there were more lineups. Any additional info will be welcomed.

JIMMY BUFFETT BAND
Kenny Buttrey was the drummer in the original lineup for Jimmy Buffett´s band, The Coral Reefer Band, but don´t know the other members. Help, please!
ROY ORBISON BAND
Kenny Buttrey was a member of Roy Orbison Band during the early/mid eighties. Can someone help here with the other members, please? Maybe Bucky Barrett on guitar and Jim Johnson on bass?
DAVIS DELUXE
This band was formed around guitarist Gary Davis, and Kenny Buttrey was a frequent member. As far as I know, the lineup was always changing, as the members were famed sessionmen and not always available for gigs.
Can someone give me more info about them, please? I´d also like to know if Kenny appears in any album by them...

ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Miguel Teron and Bob Jenkins, for this history on my cousin Kenneth Buttrey!
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Seattle (away from my mother's family in Nashville TN), caught the musical bug in the late 70's - not knowing the rich history my cousin Kenneth had with all these artists! Many signature songs I had learned thru the years he actually recorded drum tracks on!
Now I know! Thank you so very much!
