This is intended to be a homage to very many musicians I've loved since I started listening to music. My intention is to tell what I know about them, hoping that those people who like them too, will help me fill numerous gaps, which I may have in their careers and discographies. Sorry, but there are no MP3 audio files here at all, just info (and love for the musicians).

Steve Byrd (guitar)

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY:

Great guitarist, I don´t know why he didn´t get the recognition he deserves. Steve Byrd was born in Sheffield on September 25th, 1955.

First bands...

Steve's first band was with his friend Tommy Eyre, probably around 1971:

UNKNOWN BAND #
Steve Byrd
guitar
Tommy Eyre
keyboards
Kenny Slade
drums
others unknown to me. Help, please!

I guess this was the origin of the project later called Strabismus around 1972, but I don't know. Who else was there? Maybe Roger Sutton on bass?

SEABYRD

Next band was called Seabyrd, but can´t find any info about them. Help, please!

8TH DAY

This band, sometimes called 8th Day, sometimes known as Flight, was formed in the early 70s:

8TH DAY #?
?
Steve Byrd
guitar
Alan Dunn
keyboards
Kenny Slade
drums
+ others unknown to me. Help!

Other info on members of 8th Day (I know up to 3 members)

ZZEBRA

Zzebra. From left to right: Alan Marshall, Steve Byrd, Loughty Amao (below), John McCoy (below), Tommy Eyre, Liam Genockey, Dave Quincey

Terry's replacement was Steve Byrd, in November 1974. And Tommy also brought an old friend for the vocals, Alan Marshall:

John McCoy

keyboards
Dave Quincy
sax
Loughty Amao

Liam Genockey

The 2nd album, Panic, was recorded along 1975. By the way, a little secret (kept until the album was reissued on CD). The album features an uncredited appearance by Jeff Beck playing a guitar solo on the song ´Put a light on me´, co-written by great drummer Liam Genockey.

They started recording their 3rd album in Wales, but for some reason it was never released ... until now! Again, the great Disconforme label has released this 3rd album, called Take it or leave it. It includes guest appearances by 4 members of Osibisa.

They played at Reading Festival, as well as a European tour.

It's interesting noticing that this jazz-rock outfit later was used by Ian Gillan to complete his hard-rock bands (McCoy, Byrd and Genockey were members of the band; also Tommy, many years later, as we'll read).

In 2001, another album appears from the archives of John McCoy. It's called Lost world, featuring unreleased tracks as well as some live songs.

To be covered (7): Loughty Amao, Liam Genockey, Alan Marshall, John McCoy, Dave Quincy, Terry Smith, Gus Yeadon

SONJA KRISTINA BAND

Sonja is the wonderful lead singer from Curved Air. After the band folded in December 1976, she started a low-key solo career. At some point, she was backed by Steve Byrd and Pete Barnacle, among others.

SONJA KRISTINA BAND #

Unknown to me. Help needed

There was an album released in May 1980, Sonja Kristina, recorded with, among others, Steve Byrd (guitar), Laurence Juber (guitar), Colin Towns (keyboards), Ian Milne (keyboards), Gaspar Lawal (percussion), Peter Van Hooke (drums), Liam Genockey (drums), and Sonja's old mate, Darryl Way.

NEO

After some personnel changes, they get 3 fantastic musicians: Steve Byrd, John McCoy and Bryson Graham:

NEO #?
?-Aug 78
Ian North
(vocals)
Steve Byrd
(guitar)
John McCoy
(bass)
Bryson Graham
(drums)

But in August 1978, Byrd and McCoy left to join Gillan.

There's an album, mostly recorded by this lineup, but I don't know the album title. Can somebody help, please?

GILLAN

In August 1978, Ian Gillan changes his band almost completely, only retaining Colin Towns. A band called Neo was recording an album in Gillan´s studios, Kingsway, so he liked what he heard, and asked McCoy and Byrd from the band to join him (besides, this lineup reunites three ex-members of the band Zzebra):

IAN GILLAN BAND #?
Ian Gillan
vocals
Steve Byrd
guitar
John McCoy
bass
Colin Towns
keyboards
Liam Genockey
drums

They play at Reading Festival that month, but after that first gig, Liam Genockey leaves to join Gerry Rafferty.

In September 1978, a new drummer arrives, Pete Barnacle:

IAN GILLAN BAND #?
Ian Gillan
vocals
Steve Byrd
guitar
John McCoy
bass
Colin Towns
keyboards
Pete Barnacle
drums

The album Gillan wasn't originally released in England.

They remained together until May 1979, when Byrd and Barnacle left the band.

KIM WILDE BAND

He joins Kim Wilde touring band in 1982, and he stayed there for many years.

I´ve tried to make a comprehensive list of her touring members, but it´s a difficult task, so if anyone can help, it would be great filling the gaps.

After some time in Kim's band, Steve tried a new adventure, a band called Heartbeat UK.

More things...

Apart from playing in bands, Steve writes and plays music for ads and films, as well as releasing some library albums.

As a composer, some of his songs appear in albums by:
- Samantha Fox (by Samantha Fox) (1987)
- Love is (by Kim Wilde) (1992)
- Visions (by Lena Fiagbe) (1994)
but I don´t know if Steve plays in these albums (I don´t owe them). Does anybody know?

Sadly on October 3rd, I´ve been reported that Steve Byrd had passed away on October 2nd, 2016 of a heart attack in Munich, where he was attending the Oktoberfest. He was 61. Steve Byrd wrote to me in 2007, before I had made my page on him, giving me thanks for writing on his mates Tommy Eyre and Bryson Graham. He was very nice. Now, he'll be reunited with Tommy and Bryson. What a great loss to rock fans...

  • QUESTIONS:

    01. Has Steve Byrd played for Tina Turner?

    02. The Mods appeared at Steve Marriott´s Tribute Concert (along with my loved ones Bobby Tench and Clem Clempson). Which was the lineup of The Mods that played? (my guess: Warman-Byrd-Rhino-Edney-Marter). I suppose they appear in the live CD and DVD (I don´t have them, so I can´t know).

    03. Which is the title of the Neo album?

    04. Can someone give me info on more live lineups for Kim Wilde Band, please?

    05. I'd also like to get more details about 4 Bills and A Ben as well as The Mods.
