Guitar genius, Allan Holdsworth was born on August 6th, 1946 in Bradford England. He moved to London thanks to sax player Ray Warleigh. Ray and Allan had been playing together in some local band, so Ray was aware of Allan´s potential (Ray and Allan played together again along the years, as we´re going to read). From a musical family (Allan´s father was a jazz pianist), he started playing saxophone, and then, guitar, although he also played violin and keyboards.
He has a long career, having played in many different bands. While it would take me weeks to make a complete bio, I´ll post the info I had already written, as I want to publish this page as a tribute to him.

Probably one of the guitarists in the top ten of my Olympus. For years, I bought any album featuring him, no matter if he only appeared in just one track. I was very fortunate to watch him live, several years ago. A wonderful concert, with great musicianship from Jimmy Johnson and Gary Husband, but Allan Holdsworth took my breath away in some of the songs. I'm still wondering how some tones could sound from a guitar, an absolutely stunning performance.

This is really fantastic. I'm working on a comprehensive Holdsworth bio blog myself, I will add this page as a link! I've got hundreds of pages of notes on Allan's career and I've been organizing them for each year as I go along. So right near the top I see you have something for Maze, which is something I heard referred to as a joke once on a radio interview with Allan, but he never explained anything about them. Where did you get your info about Maze? I would love to mention this band but was never sure if it was real...
ReplyDeleteAnyways my blog is here:

Great job! Your (educated) guess as to the lineup for Jean-Luc Ponty's Enigmatic Ocean band is correct.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, Peter!
DeleteAbsolutely superb bit of work here, well done on this. I think there was a postumus release from paz on bandcamp.
ReplyDeleteHi, Laurie. Thanks a lot for your comment, very appreciated. My site is kept 'frozen' for 2 years, as I'm working on moving it to another host, with all the same musicians included here and more (Dean Brown, T M Stevens, Jim Beard, James Kottak, Carla Bley, David Sanborn and some veteran jazz cats such as Bill Holman, Jerry Dodgion, Gary Grant or Albert ´Tootie' Heath). Let's see if I'm able to publish the new site soon, hopefully in September. Thanks again
