This is intended to be a homage to very many musicians I've loved since I started listening to music. My intention is to tell what I know about them, hoping that those people who like them too, will help me fill numerous gaps, which I may have in their careers and discographies. Sorry, but there are no MP3 audio files here at all, just info (and love for the musicians).

Allan Holdsworth (guitar)

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY:

Guitar genius, Allan Holdsworth was born on August 6th, 1946 in Bradford England. He moved to London thanks to sax player Ray Warleigh. Ray and Allan had been playing together in some local band, so Ray was aware of Allan´s potential (Ray and Allan played together again along the years, as we´re going to read). From a musical family (Allan´s father was a jazz pianist), he started playing saxophone, and then, guitar, although he also played violin and keyboards.

He has a long career, having played in many different bands. While it would take me weeks to make a complete bio, I´ll post the info I had already written, as I want to publish this page as a tribute to him.

´IGGINBOTTOM

Formed in his native Bradford, ´Igginbottom is the first band I´ve been able to trace with Allan Holdsworth, around 1969:

They released the album ´Igginbottom´s wrench.

TEMPEST #2

Holdsworth was persuaded to remain some more in the band, now a quintet. But after a short time as a quintet, Williams left in June 1973.

And finally, Holdsworth left in July 1973, and the band became a trio.

Allan Holdsworth sadly passed away on April 15th, 2017 in Vista, California. He was 70.

Probably one of the guitarists in the top ten of my Olympus. For years, I bought any album featuring him, no matter if he only appeared in just one track. I was very fortunate to watch him live, several years ago. A wonderful concert, with great musicianship from Jimmy Johnson and Gary Husband, but Allan Holdsworth took my breath away in some of the songs. I'm still wondering how some tones could sound from a guitar, an absolutely stunning performance.

    • My opinion: A surprising thing to me was finding Holdsworth playing acoustic guitar in several tracks. But some other tracks find him on fire, such as in ´Karzie key´ or ´Gattox´ or the opening ´Good clean filth´.

    UNRELEASED PROJECTS:

  • While in Whitesnake, Neil Murray did some rehearsals with Allan Holdsworth (guitar) and Gary Husband (drums) to help out. It was not planned to be a band. This followed doing some rehearsals with Bill Bruford, Dave Stewart and Allan Holdsworth in 1977 in preparation for the 1st Bruford album Feels Good To Me, as the bassist for the album, Jeff Berlin, was busy in the USA. Neil also played 2 songs with them in early 1978 on BBC-TV show 'The Old Grey Whistle Test', and they used a bass-line Neil wrote on a track on the 2nd Bruford album One Of A Kind.

  • In 1978, Jon Hiseman, Jack Bruce and Allan Holdsworth started rehearsals, and some demos were made, but were never released.

  • In 1977, Jack Bruce and Allan Holdsworth started rehearsals, and some demos were made, but were never released. I don´t know if they´re the same demos as in 1978 (see above).
