BIOGRAPHY:

Fabulous trumpet player, he was born Harold Winston Beckett on May 30th, 1935 in Saint Michael, Barbados. That´s why he appears sometimes credited as Harold Beckett, but usually as Harry Beckett.

He soon moved to England.

He has been part of many of the most important jazz and fusion bands of England and Europe. But he also had time to play in soul and blues bands such as Keef Hartley Band, or with Alan Price and Georgie Fame.

His career is very long, so I´ll need time to try to cover a bit of it. But I wanted to include him in my site due to a tragical circumstance. Harry Beckett passed away on July 22nd, 2010, after suffering a stroke. Fortunately, his musical legacy will always remain with us.

A few months later, John McLaughlin leaves, and it starts a long list of changes in the lineups, that I haven´t been able to trace (probably Dave Mason on guitar, but can´t confirm that). Please, help with additional info.

Immediately after leaving Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames, Speedy Acquaye joined another mythical outfit: The Night-Timers, fronted by superb singer Herbie Goins.

+ others unknown to me. Help!

Can't find proper info about the different lineups, but some of the musicians that played in the band during that period were Junior Marvin, Ian Hague, Andy Rickwell and fabulous singer Linda Lewis.

Speedy appears in their EP with the songs ´The incredible Miss Brown / Coming home to you / Nº 1 in your heart / Cruisin´´, as he can be spotted in the EP cover that was released in November 1966.

Speedy also appears in their album from 1967, Number 1 in your heart. But, after a while, he left the band and started playing in sessions. By the way, this album has been reissued a couple of times, under different titles: Soul, soul, soul or also as Soultime!, including the whole album, some singles and some live track.

Harry finally left Herbie Goins & The Night Timers in 1968, having started to play with Graham Collier at the same time.

      • Guests: Annette Brox + Malcolm Griffiths, John Marshall, Paul Rodgers, Kenny Wheeler (RIP: Harry Beckett)
      • Producer: Jeff Griffin
      • Comments: The album Both sides contains great musicians in it. By the time the album was recorded, the band had lost Nick South and Sappho Korner, so Alexis called Andy Fraser and Anette Brox instead. Other musicians featured include Paul Rodgers on vocals and a horn section with Henry Lowther (trumpet), John Surman (sax), Kenny Wheeler (trumpet), as well as John Marshall on drums.
The CD edition contains 9 bonus tracks (including a previously unreleased BBC session), some of them featuring Nick South and Sappho Korner who didn´t appear in the original album.

    1. Just looking up some info on Harry Beckett, but shee-it, that's some job of work you've done on his page here! I'll have a look at some of the other entries later, but just thought you deserved a word of praise!
