Great sax player (also a skilled flute player), Herb Geller was born Herbert Geller on November 2nd, 1928 in Los Angeles, California. He started studying and playing sax when he was 8, also studying clarinet and piano.
His first professional combo was with Joe Venuti in 1946. In 1948 he played with Jimmy Zito.
He moved to New York in 1949, hired for Jack Fina Orchestra. This was followed by eight months in Claude Thornhill Orchestra. Then, he met and married piano player Lorraine Walsh, using her new name Lorraine Geller.
He worked with Jerry Wald in 1950, also with Lucky Millinder.
He moved again in 1951, back to California, with Billy May Orchestra.
He played with Chet Baker during 1953 and 1954.
New bands: Benny Goodman, Louie Bellson (he would play with him again 30 years later).
His wife, Lorraine Geller, passed away in October 1958. And then, Herb Geller moved to Berlin, Germany, playing with some of the orchestras in that city.
In 1965, he joined Friedrich Gulda Orchestra (I guess it´s The Eurojazz Orchestra).
In 1966, he moved to Hamburg, playing with NDR Orchestra.
Sadly, Herb Geller passed away on December 19th, 2013 in Hamburg, Germany, due to pneumonia. This is my tribute to him, where I´ve assembled all the info I´ve able to collect about his live bands, still missing dozens of lineups and albums.
