BIOGRAPHY:

John Edwin ´Jake´ Hanna was a fantastic jazz drummer, born in Roxbury, Massachussetts, USA on April 4th, 1931. He started playing in bands and orchestras in the Rochester area. After he left the Army, he started playing with Tommy Reed Orchestra for 1 year. After that, he moved to Boston searching for more work.

Next step was joining the Ted Weems Orchestra. At the end of the fifties, he joined Maynard Ferguson Orchestra, playing with him at Newport Festival in 1958, and Marian McPartland Trio. At that time, he also played with Toshiko Akiyoshi, Harry James, Herb Pomeroy and Bobby Hackett, but don´t have enough info to show their lineups, sorry.


DUKE ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA


In 1961, when Duke´s drummer Sam Woodyard was unavailable, Duke recruited Jake Hanna as his replacement, touring for a short stint with them, until Woodyard returned.

He also spent 10 years playing in the Merv Griffin TV Show Orchestra.

He toured Europe in 1967 with Clark Terry and Bob Brookmeyer.

He has played lots of sessions for the Concord Jazz label, also appearing in some All Stars lineups reuniting some of the label´s best players, as we´re going to read below.
