BIOGRAPHY:
Henry Jones, more known as Hank Jones, is a jazz piano maestro. He was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, USA on July 31st, 1918. A member of a immensely talented musical family (Thad Jones and Elvin Jones were his brothers), he started playing with sax player George Clark. At the end of the 30s, the three brothers played together in the Arcadia Club Band.
He moved to New York in 1944, and started playing with Bud Powell and Al Haig. His first recording session was with Hot Lips Page (he joined his band in 1944).
After that, he backed Billy Eckstine in 1945 and he spent 6 months with the John Kirby Sextet.
Next two years were spent playing on and off with Coleman Hawkins and Howard McGhee.
In 1947, he joins the Jazz At The Philharmonic tour package for several years (1947-1951).
In 1948, he backed Ella Fitzgerald in one of her European tours. This union lasted for 5 years (1948-1953).
In 1952, he worked with Artie Shaw.
He started doing session in 1953 in New York, forming a very tight rhythm section with Wendell Marshall on bass (sometimes Paul Chambers) and Kenny Clarke on drums, appearing in albums by Eddie Bert, Joe Wilder, Frank Wess, Bobby Jaspar, etc. When Clarke left New York to live in Paris, Hank Jones assembled another backing band for sessions, with Barry Galbraith (guitar), Milt Hinton (bass) and Osie Johnson (drums). They were called The Rhythm Section due to an album recorded in 1956, and they all together backed John Coltrane, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Rex Stewart, Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, just to name a few great ones.
He played live with Charlie Parker in 1950.
From 1956 to 1958, he played with Benny Goodman Orchestra. Since 1955, he has played in countless sessions for CBS as their staff pianist for 17 years.
Hank also played in Broadway stage bands, including a long time (5 years) as the pianist and conductor for Ain’t Misbehavin’, the musical based on songs by Fats Waller.
Regarding his brothers, he played with Elvin Jones in an album in 1966, and also played with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1968.
After more sessions, he played again for Benny Goodman, Stan Getz, and started playing his own gigs with Ron Carter (bass) and Tony Williams (drums).
