BIOGRAPHY:
Herb Ellis was born Mitchell Herbert Ellis in Farmersville, Texas, USA, on August 4th, 1921. He started playing harmonica when he was a child, but switched to guitar soon.
He played with Glen Gray and later, he played with Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra during 3 years. He then formed a vocal and instrumental trio called Soft Winds during 5 more years, until 1952.
OSCAR PETERSON GROUP
Around 1953, Herb Ellis joins the Oscar Peterson Trio:
They stayed together five years, until November 1958, releasing many albums as well as touring a lot. When Ellis left, Peterson didn´t replace him with another guitarist, but with a drummer (Ed Thigpen).

They stayed together five years, until November 1958, releasing many albums as well as touring a lot. When Ellis left, Peterson didn´t replace him with another guitarist, but with a drummer (Ed Thigpen).
ELLA FITZGERALD GROUP
From 1959 to 1963, he backed Ella Fitzgerald. During some break with Ella, he also backed Julie London, as well as playing in TV shows with Donn Trenner.
This was the Ella Fitzgerald Group in May 1961:
He worked with Terry Gibbs during 1964 to 1965, also starting his career as session player.
He played duo tours with Joe Pass. He did the same with Barney Kessel for a while. The idea was made bigger with the formation of Great Guitars (with Barney Kessel, Joe Pass and Charlie Byrd).
