BIOGRAPHY:
Exquisite, fantastic guitarist, also playing pedal steel guitar with great taste, Martin Jenner (or Mart Jenner, as he was widely known) is one of the most underrated guitarist I can think of. A left-handed guitarist, it's very difficult finding biographical data about him.

Martin sadly passed away on May 7th, 2003 in Perth, Western Australia, after fighting two years against cancer. Any death of a musician is a sad event, but in this case, it's really a tragedy. Check the albums where he appears or videos where he is featured, and you'll enjoy Martin, no doubt.

ReplyDeleteSorry, my mistake. Thanks for letting me know.
DeleteFascinated with the Martin Jenner info .... he played on loads of The Bachelors hits and albums .... and the last Lena Zavaroni tracks recorded by me at Redbus Studios [always with Cliff's band waiting to whisk him off to a gig]
ReplyDeleteInnovative player in the studio ... known as 'Mr Invoice' as he was the most reliable player for multi tracking his own playing ... in those days Musicians Union rules declared that an overdub was charged at 125% of the session fee extra ... second overdub 150% ... etc. etc.
For one Lena session I paid him £678. Wow! And that was when money was money!

I remember Martin when he played at The Green Man in Leytonstone in the 1970s. I think the band were Deep Feeling at the time. Admired his playing and he was a lovely man, I remember talking to him. Gutted to read he died of cancer, a very sad loss. Enjoyed reading about him, brought back wonderful memories, thanks a lot.
ReplyDeleteNo one ever mentions Redsox. That was the name of the group when I saw them. I'm sure that Deep Feeling came later. Martin was a very gifted player

Martin Jenner and Jon Falcon formed the excellent 'Flying Rollerskate Co.' in July of 1984. The band was augmented the following year by Mick Phillips who had worked previously with Martin and Jon. The 'Rollerskate' had a residency in The Beaufort Bars (since been demolished) in Queens Road Bournemouth and later in The New Beaufort, Poole Hill, Bournemouth. The band was active until 1988 at which time Martin emigrated to Australia.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, Anonymous!
DeleteHi,
DeleteThat confirms something I remember from when Cliff played Bournemouth years ago. When he was introducing Mart Jenner he made a point of saying, "Mart Jenner, from Bournemouth " which of course got him a great cheer! Interesting to read all info about Mart. Thanks.
I was lucky enough to be the third member of 'The Flying Rollerskate Company' which was the full name with Jon and Mart Jenner. I was originally seconded to fill in when Mart had more pressing engagements with Cliff, but was invited to stay on when he was back in Bournemouth. Great privilege and honour to work with both of them. Great times and wonderful people. Mick Phillips
DeleteHi, Mick - thanks a lot for writing!
DeleteThe Flying Rollerskate Company had a Sunday lunchtime residency at the Beaufort Bar from 1984 until the bar closed down in July 86. The residency continued at the New Beaufort once that establishment opened later in 1986. I was fortunate to be behind the bar for the majority of their appearances which were incredibly popular (crowds of over 150 people were a regular occurrence.
DeleteSadly after the New Beaufort ceased to exist I lost contact with all 3 members but if Mick ( or Jon!) read this Steve says Hi! RIP Mart
I too remember Martin in the early 70's playing in the Green Man, Leytonstone London. The band Deep Feeling had a residency there 5-6 nights a week. They were incredible. Martin was an absolute genius on his Dick Knight SG guitar. Anyone remember this? Faith Healer,(AHB). MY week revolved around my weekends at this place. For the price of a pint you could have a fantastic night listening to the band and his great playing. Sad loss. Thanks for this tribute it was good to read about him. Ronnie.
ReplyDeleteGuy Darrell also Passed Away in April 2014
DeleteYes, I remember the Green Man, Leytonstone, and the band Deep Feeling very well! Used to go there a lot back in those days and often saw Martin Jenner playing his Dick Knight SG. In fact, a guitarist friend of mine actually asked Martin for Dick Knight's contact details as he was so impressed with the quality of his work as seen on Martin's guitar. Anyway, my friend got in touch with him and has since ordered several Dick Knight guitars himself, plus he has had numerous repairs and modifications carried out over the years. When Martin left Deep Feeling I believe their keyboard player also left at the same time. They were replaced by Terry Newman on guitar and Al Parkes on keyboards, both of whom had just left well-known East London band Power Pack. RIP to both Martin Jenner and Dick Knight; you were both masters of your crafts.
DeleteI have been the proud owner of Martin's custom made Dick Knight SG for the last three years, and was wondering if anyone here might know when it was made? The earliest video it appears is when Marin was in the Barbara Dixon band (The Two Ronnies) in 1976. Any info on its early history would be most welcome.
DeleteMartin Jenner played with a small Perth based country band formed by Alby Pool who played around pubs Martin was a great guy shared lead with another great English guitarist named John Short, RIP Martin.
ReplyDeletei am so very sorry to learn of the passing of Martin Jenner. I only found out this very sad news, by chance today. I had been trying to find out what had happened to him for sometime, and now i know, i am all the sadder for it, RIP Martin.
DeleteThank you so much. Just found this. I was a friend of Mart's from when he was in the Cliff Richard band through to when he played with the Slobs. I viviited him in Australia justbefore he died. He was a lovely man
ReplyDeleteHi, Anonymous - thanks for your lovely post. He was such a great player, he deserved a tribute... I'm glad you like it.
DeleteIf you follow my blog at www.driver67.com you'll hear tracks you've never heard before on which Mart plays some blistering stuff, and others where he's just heartbreaking. From late '78 till mid '79 Mart played guitar on Hey Mister Record Man, an album released under the name Tax Loss. It was supposed to be a Driver 67 album, to follow up the Top 10 success of Car 67 (the only track on which Mart didn't play). By the time of release it was clear that Driver 67 had no future (Radio 1 decided we were a one hit wonder and that was Gospel back then). Mart was brought into the band by Pete Zorn with whom he played in Barbara Dickson's band. Mart, in turn, insisted we needed Dave Mattacks on drums. That was fine by Pete Zorn, who had played with Dave, and fine by me, a big Fairport fan. Mart was a phenomenal guitarist and, indeed, a lovely man. I don't think he even made 50. Hey Mister Record Man is about to be re-released after 35 years. The blog will have updates on that. Lovely to find you here, commemorating a brilliant talent.
ReplyDeleteI first met Martin when I booked him on acoustic for the Barbara Dickson "Answer Me" Album sessions way back in 1976, which I arranged and produced, beginning with the first session for the single and Bside, "Boys From The Men". Also on the session were Pete Zorn, Dave Mattacks, Ray Duffy (perc), and Babs on piano with accompanying large string session which I arranged. The session was at Scorpio Sound, Euston Road, engineer Denis Weinrich. Babs, me and Pete provided the vocal harmonies - Gordon Huntley came in and o/d'd pedal steel, including the solo. Denis Weinreich then famously "lost it" (the solo), so I think we had to pull in BJ Cole for a second try.
ReplyDeleteAll of the rest of the album was split between Scorpio and Eden studios with same line up but Jeff Alan replacing DM on drums as Dave went off on tour with the NJYO.
I worked with Martin continuously over the years including on my own recordings - we always got on like a house on fire and he shared my love for "WC Fields"!!! Lovely man, sublime player ( most lefties are!), great sight reader, and I miss him. I've already posted and mentioned some examples of his work on youtube.
Hi, Junior - Thanks for your beautiful words on Martin and for the info. My site has pages on other musicians that you know: Irene Chanter and Mark Griffiths that played in your "Second time around" album, and soon I'll publish my updated page on Miller Anderson (what a great album "Bright city", great arrangements!) and many others that you know: B J Cole, Ray Duffy, Gordon Huntley, Barry St John, Madeline Bell... If you can write me at molympus1@gmail.com, I'd be grateful. Thanks again!

ReplyDeletewhat happened to Hedda,? can I still get her album??
ReplyDeleteI used to play gigs with John Falcon back in the eighties. He and Mart were the flying roller skates . A reference to Jon's old Suzuki Van that used to carry all the gear. I have just found a rare tape they recorded at the Beufort bar
ReplyDeleteHi, Glenn. Thanks for your post. I'm sure it was a privilege being there.

ReplyDeleteHi Chris from Stevenage here absolutely loved The Green Man band in the mid seventies once a month 6 or 8 of us would go down they played every night except Tuesday. There are so many people in my life now including my kids that I'd love to take back to that pub. I've been playing drums since I was 17 and regularly went down to Graham's in Tooting for lessons. What a lovely lovely man so funny great sense of humour. They used to have drinking contests singing contests all sorts of props and gimmicks to make for a great night. One of guys who used to go down Len Crawley a good friend of mine used to play with all the guys in Hamburg in the 60s and they all remembered each other. What a band they did all the current chart stuff sometimes before it was even released then King Crimson, Yes, Floyd, The Who , Santana , side 2 of Abbey Road Deep Purple, the list is endless Dave on bass and working the lights with his feet Martin on guitar " It's just licks and tricks " he'd say , yea right Derek on keys doing god knows what with so many props Guy singing then a guy called Terry took over then the fabulous Mr Jarvis. I could and do talk for ages about these guys so very very sad to hear of most of them passing away. A truly great part of my life forever in my thoughts God bless em x

ReplyDeleteIt was lovely to read all about Martin Jenner's career, and I'm sad that he died so young, I knew him when we were teenagers, we lived in Newhaven Sussex, he went to Lewes Grammar School and we were in the same 'gang' of friends, hanging out and playing records together etc.
ReplyDeleteOnce Davey Johnstone (longtime Elton John guitarists) in his blog claimed that Martin played guitar in Dreamboat, a song recorded in 1978 during the A Single Man sessions and released in 1983 as a B-side. But I'm not sure this really happened, because:
ReplyDelete1) I can't find any other mention of it
2) Martin to my knowledge (and I'm really expert about Elton's discography) has never played in any other studio song with Elton
3) the only guitarist for the A Single Man sessions was Tim Renwick; also, Renwick was a co-writer of Dreamboat. So I cannot see any reason why he wouldn't have played guitar in his song during the sessions in which he was the only guitarist (apart from Johnstone himself in one song and BJ Cole on pedal steel in another one), and why another guitarist who was not present during the rest of the sessions should have played just on this one song.
So the mystery remains...
Hi, Andrea, thanks for your very interesting message. I had heard about Martin playing in some track by Elton (see my question #6 above, I was asking for confirmation about that). I'll try to get more info. Meanwhile, you'll have seen that I have more Elton bandmates featured in the site: Caleb Quaye, Tim Renwick, Jo Partridge, Roger Pope, Stevie Lange and others that briefly worked for him, such as Doreen Chanter, Irene Chanter, Madeline Bell, Caroline Attard, Kay Garner or Lesley Duncan. And someday, there'll be many more Elton musicians featured... Thanks again.
DeleteI have been the proud owner of Martin's Dick Grant SG Custom for the last three years or so, and I was wondering if anyone knows when the guitar was actually made? The earliest video I have seen it in was one of Barbara Dixon's appearances on the Two Ronnies in 1976. Grateful for any info on it's early history.
