Larry Wallis (guitar)

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY:

A veteran from the music scene, Larry Wallis has belonged to great bands. He was born on May 19th, 1949 in England.

THE ENTIRE SIOUX NATION

In 1968, Larry Wallis formed a band called The Entire Sioux Nation:

But after a while, singer Terry Nolder left.

PINK FAIRIES

Steve Peregrine Took (from T. Rex fame) and Mick Farren (from The Deviants) formed a new lineup of Pink Fairies in November 1969 (with Twink and Silver Darling). But when Twink left, they decided changing the name getting Larry Wallis and Tim Taylor from The Entire Sioux Nation:

Very soon, Farren left after having a fallout with Took, and the rest changed the name into Shagrat.

Shagrat was born as an spin off of Pink Fairies (Took, Wallis and Taylor) with Phil Lenoir on drums:

They recorded 3 demos at Strawberry Studios, Stockport in April 1970, and played one gig at the Phun City Festival (by the way, run by Mick Farren!) in July 1970. Taylor did not show for the gig, and Lenoir left the band afterwards.

The new drummer chosen for Shagrat was Dave Bidwell:

But Bidwell also was a member of Chicken Shack, and by then, late 1970, Wallis left for Lancaster´s Bombers.

Lancaster´s Bombers was a change of name for Blodwyn Pig when guitarist Peter Banks left them, now under the leadership of Jack Lancaster:

In February 1972, Larry Wallis joined UFO:

PINK FAIRIES (again)

In November 1972, Larry Wallis rejoined Pink Fairies, to enforce the guitar section with the great, late Mick Wayne:

But Mick Wayne soon left, so Wallis started singing lead vocals.

Now a trio, this was the new lineup for Pink Fairies in 1973:

They released an album, Kings of oblivion. The band split in March 1974 but they reunited for a special gig in July 1975, as we´re going to read.

The same trio with a couple of old members and some friend (Paul Rudolph, from Hawkwind).

Their only concert was finally released on a live album several years later, in 1982, under the name of At the Roundhouse. But that's not all; in 1991, it was reissued under the name At the roundhouse / Previously unreleased, comprising the original live album, plus additional songs by Larry Wallis from 1984, and an EP by Twink from 1977.

After their special gig in July 1975, Pink Fairies continued as a trio in September 1975 until July 1976:

In December 1975, Lucas Fox leaves (to form Warsaw Pakt with Andy Colquhoun).

In December 1975 Motorhead gets a new drummer, the mighty Phil 'Philty Animal' Taylor:

The band recorded one album, On Parole, but it remained unreleased for some years. When Motorhead was a big name, it was finally released.

In February 1976, Larry Wallis is back fully dedicated to Pink Fairies after having spent several months with Motorhead:

In January 1977, Larry Wallis played in a one-off gig with members of Thin Lizzy:

Soon later, Larry found a job working as producer for Stiff label, but this didn't mean he retired. He released a solo single produced by Nick Lowe, ´Police car / On parole´ (November 77, Stiff), being the B-side the same song he recorded with Motorhead. The single was recorded with Paul Gray on bass and Steve Nicol on drums.

LARRY WALLIS BAND

Larry Wallis toured with the Live Stiffs package, also appearing on the live album that was released some time later. Some of the artists featured in the tour, apart from Larry (with an adhoc band called Larry Wallis' Psychedelic Rowdies), were Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe & Dave Edmunds, Ian Dury & The Blockheads (featuring John Turnbull and Mickey Gallagher) and Wreckless Eric.

Larry Wallis produced a couple of records for Mick Farren: the EP Screwed up (November 77) and the album Vampires stole my lunch money (August 78). As Mick wanted to play a tour for promoting the album, in September 1978, Larry accepts being part of the band, under the name Mick Farren & The Good Guys:

Next project for Larry Wallis was teaming with legendary guitarist Wayne Kramer (from MC5 fame). Kramer needed a band to play some concerts in the UK in March 1979, and Larry and Andy Colquhouin were enlisted:

In 1991, Larry Wallis´ new band was Redbyrds:

They stayed together until 1992, and, as far as I know, they only released one EP, called Truth justice and a wholesome packed lunch. Phil Mitchell was a member of Dr. Feelgood (he came back to the band soon after). Larry was close friends with the band (Dr. Feelgood recorded several tracks written by Larry - the first that comes to my mind now is the nice ´As long as the price is right´). That's the reason why Larry Wallis appears sometimes in tribute concerts for the late Lee Brilleaux.

Larry Wallis also appeared in a special concert by The Stranglers. It was released a live album from the concert, with The Stranglers plus special friends, such as Larry.

There are sessions by Steve Peregrine Took, recorded around 1972, with appearances by Twink, Mick Wayne, Larry Wallis, Duncan Sanderson and Syd Barrett.

Sadly, Larry Wallis passed away on September 19th, 2019. He was 70. Thanks for your music, Larry!

BIOGRAPHY:

Very powerful drummer, he has played with many great bands, as we're going to read. He was born in Hounslow in January 19th, 1953. He joined his first band while he still was at school.

ROCOCO

The band was formed around Roy Shipston:

They only released a single, 'Ultrastar'/'Wildfire' in 1973. After that, Shipston and Edwards carried on with a new lineup.

SCREAMING LORD SUTCH BAND

For a while, Clive toured and recorded with Screaming Lord Sutch, but can´t find proper info. Maybe this happened when his cousin, John ´Rhino´ Edwards also played for Sutch. Can someone help with info, please?

Clive´s next band was called Screamer, but can´t find any info!

PAT TRAVERS BAND

Clive was called to replace Nicko McBrain (who left to join the Jenny Darren Band, currently in Iron Maiden):

They released the album Makin´ magic in 1977.

For their 1977 tour, they add a 2nd guitarist, Mick Dyche:

They appear in the album BBC Radio 1 live in concert with tracks recorded in 1977 and 1980.

FILTHY MCNASTY

Filthy McNasty was a parallel band formed by great singer Chris Thompson (who was lead vocalist in Manfred Mann Earth Band at that time). Some of the members also played in other bands (Geoff Whitehorn was still a member of Crawler).

In April 1978, they played at The Bridge House, Canning Town, London. It was released a collective live album, Live: a week at the Bridge E16, shared with several more bands: Jackie Lynton's Happy Days, Gerry McAvoy Jam, Salt, Remus Down Boulevard and Roll Ups. Filthy McNasty are featured in 3 tracks.

The band even recorded a live album at The Marquee, which sadly still remains unreleased.

Filthy McNasty evolved quickly into Night in November 1978 (with Chris Thompson, Stevie Lange and Billy Kristian), with Robbie McIntosh instead of Geoff.

ELECTRIC SUN

This was the band formed by guitar virtuoso Uli Jon Roth after leaving Scorpions. He formed a power trio, in the style of Jimi Hendrix, under the name Electric Sun:

WILD HORSES

Wild Horses

New drummer in Wild Horses was Clive Edwards:

They appeared at Reading Rock Festival in August 1979.

This was the lineup that recorded The first album, produced by Trevor Rabin, in the period between December 1979 and January 1980.

After several tours (where they had some special guests from time to time, such as Phil Lynott or Michael Schenker), Neil Carter left them in October 1980 (or was August 1980?) to join UFO.
They get John Lockton to replace Neil Carter around October 1980:

They released a second album, Stand your ground, released in May 1981. But the group's stability was damaged when Brian 'Robbo' Robertson and Clive Edwards left the band in June 1981 at the end of a tour.

John Cale assembled a one-off band for a festival in Holland in June 1980:

BAND WITH GARY BARDEN

Around 1981-1982, guitarist John Lockton recorded some demos with singer Gary Barden:

Lockton also played in some demos with bassist Neil Murray, but I don't know if they're the same demos as with Gary Barden. Anybody knows? Also, I'd like to know if this was intended to be a proper band, or just recording demos.

LIONHEART

Surprisingly, the new drummer, Clive Edwards, also came from the band Wild Horses to replace Frank Noon who left them for Wild Horses:

Vocal duties are shared between Stratton and Rocky. But the drum seat was never too permanent in the band. After some time (help with additional info will be welcomed!), Clive Edwards joins Grand Prix.

BERNIE MARSDEN´S SOS

This was another project by Bernie, under the name Bernie Marsden´s SOS:

I can't find accurate info about this band, so any help would be very welcomed! They played at Reading Festival in August 1982. One live track appears in the collective album Reading Rock. And seven live songs from this lineup also appeared in Bernie's own The Friday Rock Show Sessions.

GRAND PRIX

Sorry, I don´t have info about Clive´s stay in Grand Prix.

ZAINE GRIFF BAND

In July 1983, singer Zaine Griff gave a one-off gig at The Venue in London, with this backing band:

BRONZ (aka BLUEPRINT)

This band evolved from Bronz, but as Shaun Kirkpatrick was the only original member left, they changed the name to Blueprint to mark the start of a completely new band.

They recorded an album at the Roundhouse in London and at Power Plant London with Max Norman producing. But the album was never released as the record company went into liquidation... until January 2010 when the album was finally released under the title Carried by the storm. Great news!

They also played some gigs after that but things finally fell apart after 2 years.

UFO

This mythical band had a new lineup in August 1990:

In January 1992, they get a keyboardist for their European tour (by the way, the first concert of the tour was in Spain!):

In June 1993, this lineup disappears when Mogg and Way start working to reunite their most classical lineup with Schenker, so everyone else in the band leaves.
