Alan Cartwright (bass)

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY:

Very good bassist, Alan Cartwright was born Alan George Cartwright on October 10th, 1945.

FREDDIE MAC BAND

In early 1966, Ged Peck joined the massive Freddie Mac Band. They continually changed personnel. The band went from 12 to 18 members at any one time! When Ged joined, these are some of the mates that played in the band:

SWEETWATER CANAL

Sweetwater Canal was formed by Aliki Ashman around 1969, under Ronnie Scott´s management. Aliki approached the musicians in Freddie Mac Band, and asked some of them to join her. I think there were different lineups, but cannot find further info.

This was the lineup in January 1970, with Ray Draper as special guest of the band:

The band had a Friday night headlining residency at The Marquee in London, then signed to Vertigo and launched the label later that year.
They also worked as backing band for Arthur Conley and Clarence Carter when they visited England. The band was active for 1 year and a half, but then, Aliki damaged her throat and never finished the album, joining Ginger Baker´s Airforce instead.

Graham Bell joined a new band in May 1970, Every Which Way, formed by drummer Brian Davidson (ex-The Nice):

After a while, Every Which Way expands with a new member, superb guitarist John Hedley, recommended by Graham Bell and Alan Cartwright, after trying with different players:

Dave Ball comes to the band in August 1971, replacing Robin Trower, and Chris Copping moves to organ with the addition of Alan Cartwright:

They only released a live album, Live in concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, a very beautiful album, with the company of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Da Carmera Singers. It was recorded on November 18th, 1971 at the Jubilee Auditorium, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. A single from that album hit the charts, ´Conquistador´, with a superb solo by Dave Ball.

In September 1972, Dave Ball leaves the band, having recorded the tracks for next album, Grand hotel (released in March 1973), being replaced by Mick Grabham.

New recruitment for Procol Harum in September 1972 was Mick Grabham, replacing former guitarist Dave Ball:

Grabham joined just in time to play in the sessions for the Grand Hotel album that had already been started with Dave Ball, but when Ball left, they re-recorded the guitar solos with Grabham (Dave Ball appears in the bonus tracks of the CD reissue though).

They released three albums with this lineup. In Exotic birds & fruit we can find old Mick colleague in Cochise, BJ Cole, on steel guitar.

Procol's ninth is a very good album, produced by the legendary ones Leiber & Stoller. I like it a lot!

Cartwright left the band in June 1976.

They were a superb band. I have some concerts from this lineup, and Mick Grabham rocks! With or without orchestra, he gave a touch of distinction to Procol Harum.

In 1999, it has been released a live album with this lineup, called BBC live in concert. It was recorded in 1974.

Procol Harum had lost their guitarist, Mick Grabham, in May 1977. That marked the split for the band. But, the band received an award, and they were asked to make a live appearance. So, they needed to find a guitarist for that one-off show. The chosen one was Tim Renwick! This was October 1977. Some old members of the band also joined for an special lineup:

They also backed singer Julie Covington there. The award show was broadcasted on TV. Who has a copy?!!

AND THEN...

Since leaving Procol Harum, I haven´t been able to find any musical info about Alan. Maybe he just retired...

BIOGRAPHY:

Tex Makins was part of the magnificent British scene of mid 60s, playing with many musicians that later gained big fame. He was born Anthony Paul Makins on July 3rd, 1940 in Wembley, Middlesex, England.

Surprisingly, a recent album by this combo, Shake it daddy, has been issued, containing unreleased tracks from 1957!

They only did a pantomime season in Southport and used a local drummer, whose name isn't remembered.

A great loss for the band was Mick Eve who left them in July 1964. During the period he was in the band, some singers had made the odd gig with the band, although they weren't official members: John Hodgkinson (later to reappear as J.W. Hodgkinson in the superb band If), Ronnie Jones, Paul Williams or Geno Washington were some that would come down and do a number or two with the band.
