This is intended to be a homage to very many musicians I've loved since I started listening to music. My intention is to tell what I know about them, hoping that those people who like them too, will help me fill numerous gaps, which I may have in their careers and discographies. Sorry, but there are no MP3 audio files here at all, just info (and love for the musicians).

Iain Sutherland (vocals / guitar)

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY:

Iain Sutherland was born on November 17th, 1948 in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Along with his brother Gavin, they developed a joint career that gave great albums and memorable songs, such as ´Sailing´ (a huge success by Rod Stewart) or ´Arms of Mary´.

THE MYSTERIES

The Mysteries is the first band I´ve been able to trace featuring Iain Sutherland, but I haven´t any other info:

A NEW GENERATION

Iain and Gavin played for the first time together in a band called A New Generation:

They released 3 singles during 1969-70, before Iain & Gavin forming a duo, appropiately called Sutherland Brothers.

SUTHERLAND BROTHERS

Fresh from the band A New Generation, brothers Iain and Gavin formed the Sutherland Brothers:

The Sutherland Brothers soon expanded to a quartet:

Neil Hopwood

Around August 1972, The Sutherland Brothers were then a trio:

As you can guess, Sutherland Brothers was a duo formed by brothers Iain & Gavin Sutherland. Now merged with Quiver, the new team consisted of:

Their first album as this new unit was Dream kid, produced by Muff Winwood (from Spencer Davis Group fame).

When Bruce Thomas leaves Sutherland Brothers & Quiver, Tex Comer came to play with the band for a while, although he was still a member of Ace:

By the time of their second album, Beat of the street, also produced by Muff Winwood, Gavin handles bass duties:

New changes for the third album, Reach for the sky, as Peter Wood leaves the band:

Produced by Ron & Howard Albert, it has the guest collaboration of David Gilmour (from Pink Floyd) on steel guitar.

Next album was called Slipstream. It includes the collaboration of Albhy Galuten (keyboards), a name usually associated with Bee Gees. This will lead Tim to several sessions, as we'll read... The album also features Flaco Pedron on percussion.

Tim and John left the band in 1976, after several world tours (one of them supporting Elton John), but they still played in a new album, Down to Earth. Recorded with lots of musicians and friends, we can find here: Tim Renwick (guitar), Mick Grabham (guitar), Ray Flacke (guitar), Andy Pyle (bass), Rick Wills (bass), John 'Rabbit' Bundrick (keyboards), John 'Willie' Wilson (drums), Brian Bennett (percussion, from The Shadows), John Shearer (percussion, later in Byron Band).

After they left, the brothers returned to the name The Sutherland Brothers.

This was the great backing band for The Sutherland Brothers in October 1977:

In March 1978, the new backing band for The Sutherland Brothers was made of mostly American musicians:

IAIN SUTHERLAND BAND

After the demise of The Sutherland Brothers, Iain Sutherland started a solo career, with some albums on his own, but I haven´t been able to find any info about the musicians backing him:

IAIN SUTHERLAND BAND #?
?
Iain Sutherland
vocals, guitar
+ others unknown to me. Help!

Iain is mentioned as lyricist in Gary Brooker's album Echoes in the night (1985, with Tim Renwick, Eric Clapton, Matthew Fisher, Rory Gallagher, John Giblin, Henry Spinetti, B.J. Wilson).

In 1990, Iain Sutherland and Steve Hackett (ex-guitarist from Genesis) assembled an all-star band called Rock against Repatriation. It was a charity project for people from Vietnam. The single was ´Sailing´, and the musicians included the members of Marillion (with Ian Mosley), Brian May (from Queen), Steve Hackett (with his band), Simon Phillips, The Moody Blues, Godley & Creme, Paul Carrack, Phil Manzanera, Mike Rutherford, Bonnie Tyler, Mark King, Curt Smith, Judy Tzuke, Pino Palladino, Jim Diamond, and the London Chamber Orchestra, among others.

Iain Sutherland sadly passed away on November 25th, 2019. Thanks for all your music, Iain!
