BIOGRAPHY:
James Moody was a great jazz sax (tenor and contralto) and flute player. He was born in Savannah, Georgia, USA, on March 26th, 1925 (or maybe February?). His father played trombone in Tiny Bradshaw Orchestra, and taught him the love for music.
After spending three years in the Army, he was called by Dizzy Gillespie. Along with great players such as Kenny Clarke (drums), Ray Brown (bass), Cecil Payne, Milt Jackson or John Lewis, and playing superb arrangements by Tadd Dameron, Gill Fuller or the same John Lewis, he started playing his first sessions in 1946.
In 1949, James Moody left Gillespie in order to move to Europe (specially France and Sweden). Apart from recording his own albums, he also toured with Tadd Dameron Quintet in 1949.
MILES DAVIS GROUP
In 1949, Miles Davis formed a quintet co-led with Tadd Dameron:
But in May 1949, the new bassist in the Miles Davis-Tadd Dameron Quintet is Barney Spielery:
He came back to the States in 1951, quickly forming his own orchestra. That´s when Moody started using the flute.
In 1962, he joined the combo called Battle Of The Saxophones, along with Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons, among others.
In September 1962, he rejoined Dizzy Gillespie, in order to play at Monterey Festival. The orchestra was then directed by Benny Carter.

DIZZY GILLESPIE ORCHESTRA (again)
After that, Dizzy Gillespie moved to a more intimate status, forming his own quintet, also with Moody, and featuring Kenny Barron, Chris White and Rudy Collins.
This was the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet (don´t know the period, probably circa 1965):
This was the Dizzy Gillespie Group in May 1967, when they record the live album Swing low, sweet cadillac:
Then, James Moody moved to New York, followed by a new stay in Los Angeles, and then, Las Vegas in 1974.
Moody was called by Gillespie again in 1975, and since then, he was been on and off Dizzy´s bands.

James Moody sadly passed away in December 9th, 2010. He was 85. This page is still very incomplete (many bands missing, and only 123 albums; I still has to add many more), but I didn´t want to wait more time until publishing my tribute to him. I´ll be adding more and more albums to Moody´s discography in the next days...
