Magnificent and powerful drummer, Jon Hiseman was born Philip John Hiseman on June 21st, 1944 in Blackheath, South East London. He went to Colfes Grammar School, Lewisham, South East London, where he met Tony Reeves and Dave Greenslade.
Jon has played with so many bands, and some of them are quite difficult to be traced, so I´ve done my best at compiling as much info as I could. So, any contribution to fill the gaps would be very, very welcomed.
THE ALLEYCATS
Jon Hiseman played for a while with The Alleycats, probably circa 1961, but cannot find more details:

Still in 1963, two original members of Ian Bird Quintet (John Mealing and Trevor Tomkins) left the band, so Paul Raymond and Jon Hiseman were recruited:
Ian Bird left in 1964, followed by Burrows. So, Neil Ardley took over leadership of the group, that became Neil Ardley´s New Jazz Orchestra in 1964.

GRAHAM BOND BAND
Finally, Ginger Baker leaves, being replaced by a young Jon Hiseman:
In Autumn 1966, Falana left.
Now, in Autumn 1966, The Graham Bond Organization has been reduced to a trio:
They started recording an album, but it was finally shelved. In 1970, these recordings appeared inside the double album Solid Bond.
In summer 1967, they become a quartet again.
In 1966, Steve York started his close association with his friend Graham Bond, playing on and off with Graham along the next years, as we´re going to read. In 1966, Steve York played 2 gigs with this unusual and unknown lineup:
Bob Weston played briefly with Graham Bond, but can´t confirm the period (maybe summer 1967?):
The Graham Bond Organization becomes a quartet again briefly in the summer of 1967.
But then, Jon Hiseman left, and the band changed almost completely.

New bassist, drummer and a new addition, so welcome to three great players:
They released Bare wires, recorded on April 1968. Another unreleased track, 'Knockers step forward' appear in the fantastic compilation of unreleased material Thru the years.
It's interesting to note that this lineup was the seed for a great band, Colosseum. Reeves, Heckstall-Smith and Hiseman went to form this band when Mayall changed the lineup. Only Mick Taylor remained with Mayall. This was July 1968.

COLOSSEUM
It was September 1968, and this magnificent band was born:
But Jimmy Roche didn't stay in the band for long.
Roche was replaced by another great guitarist, Jimmy Litherland:
They released two albums in 1969. The first one is Those who are about to die, it was produced by Gerry Bron and Tony Reeves, and recorded in the winter of 1968.
Their 2nd album is the superb Valentyne suite. It was recorded during Spring and Summer 1969.
This lineup appeared in the rock movie Super Session, featuring great and future stars, such as Led Zeppelin, Buddy Miles, Stephen Stills, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Juicy Lucy (with Chris Mercer and Glen Campbell) and jazz player Roland Kirk. The concerts were held during two days in March 1969.
But Jim Litherland left the band in September 1969.
Colosseum - from left to right: Dave Greenslade, Tony Reeves, Jon Hiseman, Dick Heckstall-Smith, James Litherland (I think)
He even overdubbed the guitar parts for the American edition of Valentyne suite.
But this time, it was Tony Reeves who left the band before Summer 1970.
Bassist Tony Reeves had left the band before Summer 1970, and Louis Cennamo joins them:
They played some big festivals (including Bath Festival in June 1970), but in the middle of recording their new studio album, Cennamo left. Anyway, he still appears in several tracks of Daughter of time.
Album cover of a strange compilation, oddly named Daughter of time
Their music was jazz/rock, where every instrumentist played a very important role in their music, but with Clem's arrival, they had changed slightly into more rocking ways.
Daughter of time is a very strong album, including a live track, basically a drum solo, 'The time machine' (recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall, July 1970). The CD edition includes one bonus track, the instrumental 'Jumping off the sun'. Apart from the band members (the bass parts were recorded by Louis Cennamo and Mark Clarke, depending on the tracks), there is a guest appearance by Barbara Thompson (flute, sax, vocals) who used to play with the band (she´s Jon Hiseman´s wife).
After this album, they abandoned their record label, Vertigo, switching to Bronze.
Next release was a double live album, Colosseum live, recorded in Manchester & Brighton, March 1971. Originally a 2LP, the CD release (only 1CD) even includes a bonus track, 'I can't live without you'. It's a very powerful album, with lenghty renditions of their own tracks, plus covers of Jack Bruce ('Rope ladder to the moon'), Graham Bond ('Walking in the park'), T-Bone Walker ('Stormy Monday blues'), etc.
They toured the States supporting Deep Purple in the summer of 1971.
Soon after, they broke, and their new label, Bronze, released a compilation, The Collectors Colosseum, with several unreleased cuts.

TEMPEST
Tempest was formed by Jon Hiseman after the first separation of Colosseum:
But after their first album, Allan Holdsworth said he wanted to leave the band.
In order to substitute Allan Holdsworth, Jon Hiseman contacts the great Ollie Halsall to join Tempest:
Holdsworth was persuaded to remain some more in the band, now a quintet. But after a short time as a quintet, Williams left in June 1973.
Now Tempest are a quartet again without a lead vocalist, so Clarke and Halsall shared vocal duties:
And finally, Holdsworth left in July 1973, and the band became a trio.

COLOSSEUM II
In January 1975, Jon Hiseman started looking for people to form his new venture, Colosseum II (a sort of continuation of Colosseum under a different perspective. No sax, but still jazz-rock oriented). The guitarist in the band was Gary Moore, so he brought Graham Bell for the auditions. But he finally didn't join (Mike Starrs was the chosen singer). Although there were some different tentative initial lineups, the first official lineup is formed in May 1975:
After one album, Strange new flesh, in the summer of 1976, Starrs and Murray are fired at the suggestion of Bronze Records, who then dropped the band anyway.
In September 1976, they get a new bassist, John Mole, but they don't get a new singer, as Gary Moore will sing lead from now on:
They released two more albums along 1977: Electric savage and War dance. Superb albums, very intrincated. All the players are fantastic there, but I specially love the duels between Airey and Moore.
Electric savage was recorded in the winter of 76, after a week of live rehearsals. Don writes the tracks ´Am I´ and ´Intergalactic strut´. My favourite tracks are ´Put it this way´, ´Desperado´ and the superb ´Am I´.
In War dance, Don writes the tracks ´War dance´ and part of the suite ´Star maiden´.
In August 1978, Gary Moore leaves to join Thin Lizzy again.

1994 was the year where an unexpected fact happens. As the Colosseum albums were being succesful in their new CD reissues, Jon Hiseman thinks it's time for Colosseum to live again, with their most famous lineup:

Absolutely brilliant!!! They're back with a vengeance!! These concerts are nothing else than a complete masterpiece. The video shows them in great shape, and I'm willing to say that, to me, Colosseum never sounded as fantastic as now! Everybody in the band performs a superb work.

In October 1999, as Chris Farlowe is busy touring as special guest for The Manfreds, the British concerts by Colosseum featured Paul Williams on vocals:

The album was finally released in 2003 under the title of Tomorrow´s blues. Fantastic one!

The album was finally released in 2003 under the title of Tomorrow´s blues. Fantastic one!
Dick Heckstall-Smith´s health starts weakening, and he's not able to tour with the band. Their help comes from the lovely Barbara Thompson, who, although in not good health herself, agrees to lend them a hand.

JCM
I was so happy when I saw announced that Jon Hiseman had formed a new band, a power trio with his mates Clem Clempson and Mark Clarke. The band was called JCM:
They released their first album, Heroes, and announced their tour, but it had to be cancelled when Jon was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Jon passed away on June 12nd, 2018 due to complications after his brain surgery.
I´m just shocked to know about Jon Hiseman´s death. Apart from being a huge fan of his playing, loving all his bands (Colosseum, Colosseum II, Tempest, The United Jazz + Rock Ensemble, and recently JCM), he was also a great person. Keef Hartley once told me how Jon had been helping him in regaining his rights about the Keef Hartley Band albums released. Then, Jon was so kind to answer me quickly when I wrote him in 2011, asking for some comments as a tribute to his great friend Keef Hartley. He not only sent me his tribute, also sent me Barbara´s tribute too. I felt so happy when Colosseum reunited in 1994. I´ll miss him a lot but we still have all his albums. Thanks for such a magnificent contribution to music, Jon! My condolences and best wishes to his wife, the wonderful Barbara Thompson, and their daughter, singer Ana Gracey.
