Superb trumpet player (also playing flugelhorn), Lew Soloff was born Lewis Michael Soloff on February 20th, 1944 in New York.
He started playing ukelele as a child, followed by piano, but then he started studying trumpet. He became a professional musician in 1959.
Some of the band and orchestras where he played were: Maynard Ferguson, Joe Henderson/Kenny Dorham, Clark Terry, Gil Evans, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Band and Slide Hampton.
He joined Blood Sweat & Tears in May 1968, staying with the band until 1973.
He rejoined Gil Evans in 1977, playing on and off with him until Gil´s death.
He formed a quintet with Jon Faddis in 1975.
This is a list of lineups I know featuring Lew. It is obviously a very incomplete list, so any help with additional info would be welcomed! Same happens with Lew´s discography. He appears in hundreds more albums but this is what I have been able to write up to now (almost 300 albums already listed here anyway), as I´m publishing the tribute page just one day after he passed away. I´ll be including more albums to his discography along the days...
