This fantastic lineup recorded a single, ´Sitting in the rain / Out of reach´, and EP with Paul Butterfield called John Mayall´s Bluesbreakers with Paul Butterfield, and a magnificent album, A hard road.

The band also appeared in the album by Eddie Boyd called Eddie Boys & his blues band (featuring The Bluesbreakers).

In April 1967, Aynsley Dunbar left to join Jeff Beck, and Peter Green calls his mate Mick Fleetwood.

This was the new edition of John Mayall´s Bluesbreakers in April 1967 with new drummer Mick Fleetwood:

They recorded two singles, ´Double trouble / It hurts me too´ and ´Curly / Rubber duck´, and after a month, Mick Fleetwood was fired in May 1967, and was followed by Peter Green a few weeks later.

Originally called Peter Green´s Fleetwood Mac, the band was formed in July 1967, as a project by Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie (hence the original band name). Bus as John McVie decided to remain in John Mayall´s Bluesbreakers for some months, Bob Brunning temporarily joined the band:

This initial lineup recorded one track, ´Rambling pony´ before McVie finally joined in September 1967.

With John McVie on board in September 1967, Fleetwood Mac started their successful story:

They recorded the albums Fleetwood Mac (February 1968), Mr Wonderful (September 1968) and a later album with rarities, Before the split (released in May 1971).

In August 1968, the band expanded into a quintet.

In August 1968, Fleetwood Mac becomes a quintet with the addition of a third lead guitarist, Danny Kirwan:

A very unusual lineup (by then), but it proved very successful. They recorded three albums: Pious bird of good omen (August 1969), the fantastic Then play on (September 1969), Blues jam at Chess (December 1969), and the compilation Greatest hits in November 1971.

The British blues scene was shocked when Peter Green decided leaving in May 1970 in some mysterious circumstances that led to think that Peter´s stability was in danger.

After his departure from Fleetwood Mac, Peter Green released a solo album, End of the game in September 1970. And, except for a short reunion with Fleetwood Mac to help the band complete a tour after the sudden disappearance of Jeremy Spencer, almost nothing was known from Peter Green in years.

Great player Paul Kossoff had left Free in October 1972. After some recovery, he recorded a solo album (Back Street Crawler). Then, he tried to form a band, probably around 1974:

Katmandu was a sort of supergroup formed in 1983 by veteran players Ray Dorset, Vincent Crane and Peter Green:

They split in the autumn of 1984, and Peter Green disappeared again from the musical scene until 12 years later.

In March 1996, after several years in retirement, Cozy Powell helped Peter Green to make a comeback after almost 25 years of being wondering in and out of music, and secured a powerful backing band under the name Splinter Band with his mate Neil Murray, along with Spike Edney and the loyal Nigel Watson who had stayed near Green in his most obscure periods since the early 70s.

They played here in Spain in 1997, but I couldn't assist!! :( I'll regret from that all of my life!

Their album, Peter Green Splinter Group was recorded live, except 2 acoustic tracks. It's all-blues. With good renditions of some classics, from bluesmen like Otis Rush, Robert Johnson, Elmore James. And with a rockin' rendition of ´Going down´, a song covered by many people, like Jeff Beck (by the way, with Cozy on drums), Freddie King, and even G3 on tour (that is, the guitar aces Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson in his joint live album). From the past, there's no Fleetwood Mac songs (well, only an Otis Rush song ´Homework´ that Fleetwood Mac played in an album with Chicago bluesmen), and we can find a song Peter Green used to play in his John Mayall days, ´The Stumble´.

Finally, Spike Edney left the band to move on to other projects, soon followed by Cozy Powell.

In 1996, after Spike Edney left Peter Green Splinter Group, keyboardist Jim Johnson played for some time with them:

After Neil Murray left, the new bassist for Peter Green Splinter Group was the great Peter Stroud:

He passed away on his sleep on July 25th, 2020 in Canvey Island, Essex, England. He was 73.

There is Jimi Hendrix, there is Eric Clapton, there you have Jeff Beck, Gary Moore and others, but to me, Peter Green was the most shocking guitarist I've ever heard. His tone was so warm, so great, so beautiful, so sad... It's not only me, B B King said that with better words. I'll miss you a lot, Peter. I'm listening to you for the last 40 years of my life, and I'll never get enough of your music. Rest in peace.

I wrote my fist tribute page to Peter on April 1998. Until I find the time to write a proper, detailed bio and discography, I include the text of my old (obviously outdated) page about Peter Green...

MY OLD TRIBUTE PAGE (written on 14/April/1998)

If I had to choose only one guitarist, it had to be Peter Green. I've loved many great guitarists in my life (Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, and many more), but Peter has always been very special to me. I first heard him when I was 17, in a Spanish John Mayall compilation, where I found 3 tracks from the album A hard road. The only Mayall guitarist I had heard till then was Eric Clapton. That compilation contained 3 tracks with Eric, 3 tracks with Peter ('A hard road', 'Another kind of love' and 'Sitting in the rain'), 3 tracks with Mick Taylor, plus a song recorded alone by John Mayall and great drummer Keef Hartley ('Sonny Boy blow'), and another one. Since then, I love all the people in this album, but Peter really shocked me. I tried to find their album A hard road, but didn't find it. So, next thing was trying to get the Fleetwood Mac albums. The band's original name was "Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac", although they shortened the name later. It's a thing that many current FM fans even don't know. To me, Fleetwood Mac WAS Peter Green. I was unhappy to know that the band found their biggest success with a lineup that didn't deal with the blues. It was so strange to me that they didn't reach the highest peaks. Songs like 'Black magic woman' (later covered by Santana), 'Albatross', 'The green Manalishi' (played live by Judas Priest), 'Oh well', and my all-time favourite, 'Man of the world', are so great! I finally found one of his solo albums, Little dreamer, and I was very glad. I love this album, and since then, I've bought all his albums. In the mid 80s, he seemed to disappear again, but the great surprise was when I read about Peter coming back to music with a great lineup, under the monicker Splinter Group, backed by some of my Olympus musicians (Cozy Powell and Neil Murray). As far as I know, Peter has played in Spain twice. First time was in 1984, with his band Kolors. I saw the ads, but never read any review, so I finally never knew if the concerts really happened. And last time, he came to play in Madrid in July 1997, but I couldn't go. I hope he'll give me the chance of watching him playing in the future. Some months ago, I saw a 2CD tribute to him, called Rattlesnake guitar: the music of Peter Green. There are 29 songs, played with great taste and distinction by great musicians, such as Ken Hensley, Bobby Tench, Ray Gomez, Kim Simmonds, Billy Sheehan, Mick Abrahams, Luther Grosvenor, Max Middleton, and the late Rory Gallagher, who performed here his last work. A friend of mine once told me that guitarist Bernie Marsden also recorded a previous tribute to Peter Green, but I don't remember its title. In 1995, Gary Moore released his album Blues for Greeny, dedicated to Peter. It wasn't his first tribute, as he already played a Peter Green track in his album Still got the blues, called 'Stop messin' around'. More details? We can read in the booklet, "This record is dedicated to Peter Green". We also can see the Mayall & Green album, A hard road, in the back cover of Gary's album. Plus, the singles and 12" Gary released included non-album tracks, usually Peter Green songs, such as 'The stumble'. Peter himself makes a guest appearance in Gary's live video Blues for Greeny live, although he doesn't play there. Next thing was to release a new album, The Robert Johnson songbook! As you can guess, it's a tribute to the legendary bluesman. Quite acoustic, it contains the guest collaboration of Paul Rodgers singing in one track. In 1999, Peter released a limited edition of a 2CD live, The Soho session. Very lovely, it includes several Fleetwood Mac renditions. After that, Neil Murray left the band, but was replaced by a great player, Peter Stroud. Next albums were Destiny road and Time traders, which I've also bought, of course. And now, I'm after a live album that Peter sells in his live gigs... Peter, please, keep on playing the blues!!!   (click here for a bigger image, 84 Kb.)
