This is intended to be a homage to very many musicians I've loved since I started listening to music. My intention is to tell what I know about them, hoping that those people who like them too, will help me fill numerous gaps, which I may have in their careers and discographies. Sorry, but there are no MP3 audio files here at all, just info (and love for the musicians).

BIOGRAPHY:

Great sax and flute player, Dave Winthrop (nicknamed Winnie) was born on November 27th, 1948, in Camden, New Jersey, but emigrated to England when he was 8.

THE MOOCHE

The Mooche was a band from Chelmsford:

THE MOOCHE #?
?
Ian Pearce
guitar
Dave Soars
bass
Brian Tatum
keyboards, vocals
Jeff Dann
drums

They recorded just one single in 1969 for the Pye label, ´Hot smoke and sassafras / Seen through a light´, produced by John Schroeder, but don´t know if this was made by the musicians listed above, apart from Dave. Does anybody know?

SUPERTRAMP

Winthrop joined Supertramp in 1970:

SUPERTRAMP #?
1970-Feb 73
Roger Hodgson
vocals, guitar
Rick Davies
vocals, keyboards
Frank Farrell
bass
Kevin Currie
drums

The band was to record their first album, but for some reason, Dave Winthrop didn´t play on it.

But he played in their 2nd album, Indelibly stamped, and some live songs can be found in the movie Extremes (although they don't appear in the soundtrack released).

In February 1973, all the members left Hodgson & Davies alone, who carried on with a new lineup.

CHICKEN SHACK

In 1977, Stan Webb resurrects mythical band Chicken Shack:

CHICKEN SHACK #?
1977
êBroken Glass
êBroken Glass
Stan Webb
vocals, guitar
Robbie Blunt
guitar, vocals
Paul Martinez
bass

They recorded an album, The creeper, with help from Tony Ashton.

After a while, Martinez left, and his replacement is Ray Knott, Spevock´s old mate in Babe Ruth:

CHICKEN SHACK #?
1977-1978
Stan Webb
vocals, guitar
Robbie Blunt
guitar, vocals
Ray Knott
bass

but Knott left the band very soon.

Steve York joined Chicken Shack around 1978, replacing Ray Knott:

CHICKEN SHACK #?
1978-1979
Stan Webb
vocals, guitar
Robbie Blunt
guitar, vocals
Steve York
bass

This lineup released a very good album in 1978, That's the way we are, before Spevock left them in 1979.

For a tour in 1979, the drum seat in Chicken Shack was filled by Louis Borenius:

CHICKEN SHACK #
Stan Webb
vocals, guitar
Robbie Blunt
guitar, vocals
Steve York
bass
Louis Borenius
drums
The Bucksê

In 1979, all the members (except Stan Webb, of course) left the band.

THE YOUNG BUCKS

I still have to find proper info about Dave playing with The Young Bucks. I don´t know if it´s my mistake, but were The Bucks and The Young Bucks the same band? I know many members are the same, but can´t say it for sure. And I guess there were more lineups with Dave in the band (probably with Seb Shelton at the same time). Help, please!

THE BUCKS

In 1979, Dave Winthrop joins The Bucks:

THE BUCKS #?
1979-Jul 79
êChicken Shack
Pat Rafferty
vocals, keyboards
Tony Wadsworth
vocals, guitar
Geoff Lincoln
bass
Archie Brown
sax
Jeff Rich
drums
Secret Affairê

But they split after a few months, in July 1979.

SECRET AFFAIR

In July 1979, Secret Affair expands to a quintet when Dave Winthrop joins:

SECRET AFFAIR #2
Jul 79-1980
êThe Bucks
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
David Cairns
guitar
Dennis Smith
bass
Seb Shelton
drums

They released two albums, Glory boys (in 1979, with help on vocals by fantastic singer Maggie Ryder) and Behind close doors (in 1980).

Their drummer left in 1980:

SECRET AFFAIR #3
1980-?
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
David Cairns
guitar
Dennis Smith
bass
Paul Bultitude
drums

But they still released a 3rd album, Business as usual, before parting ways finally in May 1982.

CHICKEN SHACK (again)

In 1986, Dave surprisingly rejoins Chicken Shack:

CHICKEN SHACK #?
1986-?
Stan Webb
vocals, guitar
Robbie Blunt
guitar, vocals
Jan Connolly
bass
Dave Wilkinson
keyboards
John Gunzell
drums

But he had to leave after a while due to health problems.

AND THEN...

Dave also plays with Chicken Shack from time to time, when he is available (it seems he rejoined the band in 2008, but can´t find info). He also plays in a Bruce Springsteen tribute band, and formed his own jazz trio, called Winthrop´s Jazz Bollocks.

SECRET AFFAIR (again)

In June 2002, Page & Cairns reform the last lineup of Secret Affair for 3 gigs:

SECRET AFFAIR #?
Jun 02
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
David Cairns
guitar
Dennis Smith
bass
Paul Bultitude
drums

And again, in June 2003, Secret Affair reforms for a special gig to promote their new compilation, Time for action - the anthology:

SECRET AFFAIR #?
Jun 03
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
David Cairns
guitar
Dennis Smith
bass
Paul Bultitude
drums

This concert was filmed and later released on DVD, as Live @ The Scala.

IAN PAGE AND THE AFFAIR

Ian Page formed his own band, called Ian Page And The Affair around 1999. In 2002, he brings his past mate Dave Winthrop.

This was their lineup in 2004:

IAN PAGE BAND #?
2004
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
Jel Lee
guitar
Ian Jones
bass
Andy Brush
sax, percussion
Steve Rinaldi
trombone, percussion
Bob Clarke
drums

SECRET AFFAIR (again)

In April 2006, Page & Cairns reform Secret Affair again for a benefit gig with a couple of new players:

SECRET AFFAIR #?
Apr 06
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
David Cairns
guitar
Nick Abnett
bass
Simon Hanson
drums

IAN PAGE AND THE AFFAIR (again)

This was Ian Page And The Affair around 2006:

IAN PAGE BAND #?
2006
Ian Page
vocals, trumpet, keyboards
Jel Lee
guitar
Ian Jones
bass
Andy Brush
sax, percussion
Bob Clarke
drums

QUESTIONS:

01. Did Dave play with Chicken Shack around 1970-71?

02. I need to find more info about sessions for Stray Cats and Jonathan Perkins.

03. I think the info on Supertramp is not accurate. Maybe Dave joined when David Palmer and Robert Millar were in the band. Can someone help, please?

    Billy Law (drums)

    BANDS:
    • Clyde Valley Stompers
    • The Jazz Cardinals [May 62-Nov 62]
    • Long John Baldry Band [1964-Oct 64]
    • Alex Harvey Band [1965]
    • Alan Elsdon Group [1966]
    • Edmond Hall Group [1966]

    BIOGRAPHY:

Billy Law was born William Alexander Law, in Edinburgh, Lothian, Scotland. The first band I´ve been able to trace by him is the Clyde Valley Stompers.

    CLYDE VALLEY STOMPERS

Clyde Valley Stompers was a Scottish traditional jazz band. Led by the late Ian Menzies since 1954, it had many different lineups.

Billy Law was a member of the band, probably circa 1962 or maybe 1963, but can´t find the complete info, so if someone can help, it would be welcomed, please.

    CLYDE VALLEY STOMPERS #?
    ?
    Ian Menzies
    trombone
    Lindsay Cooper
    bass
    Norrie Brown
    banjo
    + others unknown to me.

    THE JAZZ CARDINALS

In May 1962, Billy Law emmigrated to Denmark, in order to join a dixieland jazz band called The Jazz Cardinals:

    THE JAZZ CARDINALS #?
    May 62-Aug 62
    Jack Brunckhorst
    banjo
    Alfred Lauridsen
    bass
    Dieter Kock
    trumpet
    Jorgen Jacobsen
    clarinet
    Goffi Rasmussen
    trombone

In August 1962, Dieter Kock leaves:

    THE JAZZ CARDINALS #?
    Aug 62-Nov 62
    Jack Brunckhorst
    banjo
    Alfred Lauridsen
    bass
    Per Hansen
    trumpet
    Jorgen Jacobsen
    clarinet
    Goffi Rasmussen
    trombone

They recorded an album during summer 1962, but I cannot be sure if Billy appears there. Does anybody know?

Finally, Billy left the band around November 1962 (being replaced by none other than the mythical Viv Prince).

LONG JOHN BALDRY & THE HOOCHIE COOCHIE MEN

Ernie O'Malley was replaced by Billy Law, sometime late in 1964:

    LONG JOHN BALDRY BAND #?
    1964 - Oct 64
    Long John Baldry
    vocals
    Rod Stewart
    vocals
    Geoff Bradford
    guitar
    Cliff Barton
    bass
    Johnny Parker
    piano

They remained together until October 1964, when the band changed and Billy Law left.

    ALEX HARVEY SOUL BAND

Next thing I know about Billy Law is that he joins Alex Harvey Soul Band in 1965:

    ALEX HARVEY BAND #?
    1965
    Alex Harvey
    vocals, guitar
    Wally Stewart
    vocals
    Jimmy Grimes
    bass
    Bill Patrick
    sax, flute

I don't know if Billy appears in any of their albums, so any additional info would be very welcomed.

    ALAN ELSDON GROUP

Later, Billy Law was a member of Alan Elsdon's Band, a jazz combo:

    ALAN ELSDON GROUP #?
    ?
    Edmond Hall
    clarinet
    +
    Alan Elsdon
    trumpet
    Johnny Barton
    guitar, banjo
    Mick Gilligan
    bass
    Colin Bates
    piano
    Andy Cooper
    clarinet, sax
    Phil Rhodes
    trombone

They played backing different jazz players, appearing in album by clarinet players Edmond Hall or Albert Nicholas.

    EDMOND HALL GROUP

Billy Law was also a member of Edmond Hall Quartet (all of them taken from Alan Elsdon Band):

    EDMOND HALL GROUP #?
    ?
    Edmond Hall
    clarinet
    Mick Gilligan
    bass
    Colin Bates
    piano

They released the album Edmond Hall Quartet.

    AND THEN...

And then, I haven´t been able to find more info or credits about Billy Law. Does anybody know why? Maybe he retired from music business?

He started playing guitar under the stage name Cliff Curtis.

    RICKY WADE AND THE CROSSFIRES

Cliff was the guitarist in that band, but can´t find info about the other players. Help, please!

    CYRIL DAVIES R&B ALL STARS

After turning down an offer to join John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, in June 1963, Cliff Barton joined famed band Cyril Davies R&B All Stars:

CYRIL DAVIES R&B ALL STARS #
    Jun 63
    Cyril Davies

    Keith Scott
    piano
    Carlo Little
    drums
    The Velvettes
    vocals

But that same month, mighty Carlo Little leaves.
Micky Waller is called to replace Carlo Little in Cyril Davies R&B All Stars, in June 1963:

CYRIL DAVIES R&B ALL STARS #
    Jun 63-end 63
    Cyril Davies

    Keith Scott
    piano
    Micky Waller
    drums
    The Velvettes
    vocals

At the end of 1963, Waller and Scott left.
At the end of 1963, there were a couple of changes in the lineup. Johnny Parker replaced Keith Scott, and Bob Wackett replaced Micky Waller:

CYRIL DAVIES R&B ALL STARS #
    end 63-Jan 64
    Cyril Davies
    vocals, harmonica
    Long John Baldry

But Cyril Davies died of leukemia on January 7, 1964. He was 32. Then, Long John Baldry took with him most of these musicians, now under the new name Hoochie Coochie Men.
A curious note. While he still was with Cyril Davies, he was asked to join John Mayall. He declined, but recommended a young bass player, John McVie. The rest is history.

LONG JOHN BALDRY & THE HOOCHIE COOCHIE MEN

In January 1964, Long John Baldry leads the former Cyril Davies band, now under the new name Hoochie Coochie Men, with some changes, including a very young singer called Rod Stewart:

    Geoff Bradford
    guitar
    Cliff Barton
    bass
    Johnny Parker
    piano
    Ernie O´Malley
    drums

There's an album released by the band, Long John's Blues, issued with 2 different album covers.
Ernie O'Malley was replaced by Billy Law, sometime late in 1964:

    LONG JOHN BALDRY BAND #?
    1964 - Oct 64
    Long John Baldry
    vocals
    Rod Stewart
    vocals
    Geoff Bradford
    guitar
    Cliff Barton
    bass
    Johnny Parker
    piano

They remained together until October 1964, when the band changed and Billy Law left.
In October 1964, the band changes a lot, with an added horn section:

    LONG JOHN BALDRY BAND #?
    Oct 64-Nov 64
    Long John Baldry
    vocals

But this fantastic team sadly parted ways next month, in November 1964. Baldry and Armit recruited a new band, while the other guys (less Rod Stewart) continued under the name Original All Stars.

    ORIGINAL ALL STARS

Original All Stars was the band formed in November 1964 from Long John Baldry´s Hoochie Coochie Men with the great singer Brian Knight:

    ORIGINAL ALL STARS #1
    Nov 64-Jan 65
êLong John Baldry & The Hoochie Coochie Men

    Laurie Scott
    piano
    Al Gay
    sax
    Trevor Watts
    sax
    Johnny Spooner
    drums

But in January 1965, the band split.

    AND THEN

Sometime around 1965, Jimmy Page on the producer's role assembled a studio band to record some tracks for an album for singer Andy Anderson. This was the fabulous lineup:

    Jeff Beck (guitar)
    Cliff Barton (bass)
    Nicky Hopkins (piano)
    Carlo Little (drums)

The recordings were never released as a proper album, but many jam tracks were also recorded, and many of them have been appearing in lots of compilations from the Immediate label. I have a couple, but there are more than 20 compilations including them.

    JULIAN COVEY & THE MACHINE

Julian Covey is pseudonym for drummer Phil Kinorra (from Brian Auger band). Then he formed his own band, Julian Covey & The Machine, probaby around 1965. Many famous musicians played in this band: John Moorshead (guitar, later to join Aynsley Dunbar in Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation), Pete Bardens (keyboards, later in Them and Camel), Pete Solley (keyboards), or Dave Mason (guitar, later in Traffic). Sorry, I don't have more info about the lineups, so any help would be very appreciated!!

Jim Cregan and Cliff Barton played together in the band, but can´t find info about the other musicians or the approximate period. Can someone help, please?

The band released a single, 'A little bit hurt / Sweet bacon (1967, Island), that was a sort of a hit, but I don't know the musicians featured there. Does anybody know?

This was the Alan Price Set around July 1965:

    Cliff Barton
    bass
    John Walters
    trumpet
    Nigel Stanger

    Jeff Robinson
    drums

    GEORGIE FAME BAND

Still in December 1965, Cliff Barton join Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames:

    GEORGIE FAME BAND #?

    sax
    Glenn Hughes
    sax
    Speedy Acquaye
    percussion
    Mitch Mitchell
    drums

They released a 3rd album, Sweet things. But in July 1966, Speedy and Cliff leave the band (Cliff was replaced by another great player, Ricky Brown). The band called it a day 4 months later. It was the end of an era...

    FREE AT LAST

Soon after, in September 1966, Cliff Barton joins Alexis Korner in his new band, called Free At Last:

    FREE AT LAST #1
    Sep 66-?
    Alexis Korner
    vocals, guitar
    Cliff Barton
    bass
    Hughie Flint
    drums

But, after some months, Cliff left the band before January 1967 (being replaced by Binky McKenzie).

    DENNY LAINE BAND

With Binky McKenzie´s departure, Cliff Barton joins in May 1967, with a few changes in the string section:

    DENNY LAINE BAND #?
    May 67-Jul 67
    Denny Laine
    vocals, guitar
    Cliff Barton
    bass
    Viv Prince
    drums
    +
    Clive Gillinson
    cello
    Haflidi Halynisson
    cello
    Angus Anderson
    violin
    John Stein
    violin

But Cliff didn´t stay too much, and he was replaced in July 1967 by Andy Leigh.

    AND THEN...

He started playing sessions (mostly for Donovan), but it's almost impossible tracking down session credits for recordings made in the 60s. If anyone knows about more recordings with Cliff Barton, please send me a message!

After that, I only know that Cliff sadly died on May 16th, 1968 at the West Middlesex Hospital in London, from septicaemia due to heroin addiction, after spending 5 days at a hospital. He was just 24. Such a great talent disappeared so soon.

    • Chicago Line Blues Band
    • Elkie Brooks Band [1968]

    • Three´s Company [1977]
    • Elton Dean Group [1979]
    • Avantgarage [1983]
    • Music On The Wall [1985]

    BIOGRAPHY:

Fantastic guitarist, it´s a pity that we can´t have many albums with his playing...

Ivan Zagni was born in Norwich, England, on October 16th, 1942. Before playing guitar, he started singing in a church choir.

First band I know about Ivan was called The Cadillacs.

    THE CADILLACS

Band from Norwich formed in 1959 by the three brothers Zagni and a couple of friends:

    THE CADILLACS #
    John Zagni
    Frank Zagni
    Micky Woodcock
    Stewy Mackintosh
    drums, vocals

    THE CONTINENTALS

They were a band from Norwich, in the early 60s. They had many different lineups, but one of them included superb vocalist Mike Patto, who replaced a previous singer called Milton Ingram.

    THE CONTINENTALS #?
    ?
    Mike Patto
    vocals
    Harvey Platt
    bass
+ others unknown to me. Help!

    THE NEWS

In 1966, The Continentals sign with Decca, changing their name to The News. Mike Patto was a member, but don´t have more details.

This was the lineup that recorded two singles:

    THE NEWS #?
    1966
    Andy Fields
    vocals, keyboards
    Harvey Platt
    bass
    Denny Royal
    drums

    The singles were: ´The entertainer´ (1966) and ´I count the tears´ (1966).

    After that, Andy Fields left.

Andy Fields was replaced by Peter Miller:

    THE NEWS #?
    ?
    Peter Miller
    vocals
    Harvey Platt
    bass
    Denny Royal
    drums

But they split very soon after the new recruitment.

    CHICAGO LINE BLUES BAND

I still need to check this info. Supposedly, Ivan was a member, along with his mates Mike Patto, Tim Hinkley and Louis Cennamo. But don´t know the exact lineup(s).

    ELKIE BROOKS BAND

Around 1968, Elkie Brooks tried to form his own band:

    ELKIE BROOKS BAND #1
    1968
    Elkie Brooks
    vocals
    Tim Hinkley
    keyboards
    Martin Harryman
    drums
    Novaê
    Novaê
    Novaê

But after a month of rehearsals, Elkie parted ways with the musicians, who remained together for a while under the new name Nova.

    NOVA

Power trio with great musicians formed at the end of 1968, when they left Elkie Brooks:

    NOVA #1
    1968-Jan 69
    êElkie Brooks Band
    êElkie Brooks Band
    êElkie Brooks Band
    Tim Hinkley
    keyboards
    Martin Harryman
    drums
    Jody Grindê
    Jody Grindê
    Jody Grindê

After a while, they changed their name to Jody Grind in January 1969.

    JODY GRIND

This was the initial lineup for Jody Grind, when they changed their name (from Nova) in January 1969:

    JODY GRIND #1
    Jan 69-Mar 69
    êNova
    êNova
    êNova
    Tim Hinkley
    keyboards
    Martin Harryman
    drums

But Harryman left the band in March 1969.
Their new drummer was Barry Wilson, in March 1969:

    JODY GRIND #2
    Mar 69-Nov 69
    Tim Hinkley
    keyboards
    Barry Wilson
    drums
    Bogomasê
    Bogomasê

They recorded their first album, One step on, with help from old mate Louis Cennamo (still in Renaissance) on bass, David Palmer on arrangements and a horn section. The album was released in October 1969. But, only one month later, in November 1969, Zagni and Wilson left to form Bogomas (with Cennamo).

    BOGOMAS

Bogomas was a trio with Zagni and Wilson (from Jody Grind) with Cennamo who had just left Renaissance:

    BOGOMAS #1
    ?
    êJody Grind
    êRenaissance
    êJody Grind
    Louis Cennamo
    bass
    Barry Wilson
    drums

They didn´t last too long together, and after six months working together and composing, they parted ways, without having played any gig. A pity.

    BLUE WHALE

Blue Whale was a new band formed by Aynsley Dunbar in 1969, only keeping Tommy Eyre from his former band (Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation):

    BLUE WHALE #1
    1969-?
    êBogomas
    êAynsley Dunbar Retaliation
    êAynsley Dunbar Retaliation
    Paul Williams
    vocals
    Roger Sutton
    bass
    Tommy Eyre
    keyboards
    Aynsley Dunbar
    drums
    Frank Zappa Bandê

Robert Fripp (cerebrum in King Crimson) almost joined the group. They released an album, Blue whale, in a progressive style, with long jamming songs. But Aynsley dissolved the band, when he got a call from Frank Zappa to join forces. Coincidentally, the album contains a long version of Zappa's ´Willie the pimp´.

    AND THEN...

He went back to Norwich, as the choir master for their Cathedral, and started composing classical works. He remained there from 1971 to 1977.

In 1977, he came back to London, and started working with some band, such as The Electric String Trio, but can´t find proper details about them. Help, please!

    THREE´S COMPANY

Around 1977, Elton Dean formed this avant-garde group:

    THREE´S COMPANY #?
    1977
    Marcio Mattos
    bass
    Elton Dean
    sax

They split soon later, but many years later, some recordings appeared in Elton Dean´s album Three´s company two´s a crowd.

    ELTON DEAN GROUP

In July 1979, Elton Dean plays 1 gig with this lineup:

    ELTON DEAN GROUP #?
    Jul 79
    Elton Dean
    sax
    Louis Moholo
    drums

In November 1979, Ivan Zagni plays another gig with Elton Dean:

    ELTON DEAN GROUP #?
    Nov 79
    Marcio Mattos
    bass
    Elton Dean
    sax
    John Stevens
    drums

    AND THEN...

In 1980, he went to live to New Zealand, and continued composing.

    AVANT GARAGE

Avant Garage was a band from New Zealand featuring Ivan Zagni with some of his mates from Blam Blam Blam. I haven´t been able to find proper info on lineups, so this is the only info I have: Ivan Zagni, Tim Mahon and Peter Scholes were members, but don´t know if at the same time.

The band released 2 albums,Garage to gallery and Avant Garage Music, both in 1983, but couldn´t find them, so don´t know who plays there. Can someone help, please?

    AVANT GARAGE #?
    ?
    Tim Mahon
    Peter Scholes
+ others unknown to me. Help!

    MUSIC ON THE WALL

Music On The Wall was a duo comprising Ivan Zagni and Peter Scholes, formed in 1985:

    MUSIC ON THE WALL #1
    1985-?
    Peter Scholes

But don´t have more info on them.

    AND THEN...

In 1986, Ivan started working for orchestras, such as Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, as well as soundtracks.
